Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2016 Hey guys. Deerhair... I guess I'm just getting beyond beginner level for this style of tie... just wondering if there are any tips out there. I'm sure the question has been asked before so I apologise... i was experimenting tonight with some different techniques and honestly.... while I'm sure they will fish I am really not happy with the end product. My biggest issue is in the finishing if there are particular hints for that aspect. Many thanks.
Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2016 Oh. I know they aren't tight enough. But unfortunately that's a relict of the technique I tried tonight
josephcsylvia 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2016 Those look good, id watch the hook gap with deer hair. You miss alot of fish if you dont leave room there. For a final trim I use a double sided razor blade and curve it in my fingers. Depending on how tight you want the head I have found stacking hair gets alot more dense than spinning hair imo. I also brush all the hair upright before triming

vicente 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2016 That loose pack almost looks better on that pattern that a tighter pack might. I have started flying between my packs, add a bunch or how ever many bunches I am before I flair it flair it pack it put some thin head cement on and repeat. It's been getting them to come out much tighter and easier to finish. I trim/ carve them with a double edged razor.
Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2016 Thanks mate, Honestly, I do think they'll fish, and they're not as bad as I thought they might be. But they definitely need to be tighter. HOWEVER, my opinion may change when I see how it behaves in the water.
Philly 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2016 Pack the deer hair as tight as you can. I use a double edge razor to trim, trick is to break it in half. Gives you more flexibility than the whole blade.

Bruce Derington 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2016 So, with floating bugs, it's important for proper packing/stacking , for any others, not so much
rstaight 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2016 The second picture shows improvement. I don't tie that much with deer hair but when I do I go through what seems like a lot of hair. I am never satisfied with how tight it is. I pack as tight as I can then try 2 or 3 more times. The other thing with deer hair is you will need a large area to catch the trimmings and waste and a good vacuum cleaner.
