You need a lot of CDC to float a fly. One of the gurus of CDC (Marc Pettijean or Rene Harrop) said that most tyers don't use enough CDC.


As Cold said, the sparse wing on an RS-2 is not meant to float the fly. RS-2 are typically fished sub surface.


Charlie Craven's Mole Fly is a CDC emerger designed to float with wing above the surface and body beneath. See how much CDC it takes. Almost as much CDC wing as body.
