BobHRAH 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2018 Does anyone use domestic bird feathers. such as mourning dove, urban pigeon, rail, or ??. Just did an internet search for them as used in fly tying and found virtually nothing. Does anyone know of a legal source for the skins; again, internet showed nothing. I would think that what with the abundance of doves and pigeons, they would be available. Thanks, Bob H
Tom Cummings 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2018 Some pidgeon feathers have been used. Quail grouse duck and geese would be the more common as well as turkey and pheasant for US game birds. As for skins look on eBay or order from stores.
SBPatt 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2018 I used some small feathers from a mourning dove that a hawk killed in our back yard; worked well for softhackles. Moscow Hide and Fur has some rock dove (pigeon) feathers. https://www.hideandfur.com/inventory/3030.html Regards, Scott
rstaight 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2018 Starling works well for soft hackles. Has been substituted for jungle cock in the past but you can't get the same look.
