Fly Tying

RIP Dick Miller

Recommended Posts

I received word today that the man who taught me to tie flies has passed away. Dick Miller was an elementary school 5th and 6th grade teacher in Grants Pass, Oregon. In the mid 1950's schools had after school clubs. Mr. Miller had a fly tying club. We had very elementary tools, a $1.00 clamp vise, no bobbins, we used wooden clothespins to keep tension on the thread. There were several places to buy materials in town as we were on the Rogue River. He must have introduced hundreds of kids to fly tying and fly fishing. He is one of those people who had a profound influence on fly fishing that no one, out side of his students, will ever know about. I got to fish the Marble Mountain Wilderness because of his stories about the place. I hope Lee Wolff, Lefty and all the others welcome him to the eternal trout stream. Rest in peace my good friend.
