mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2017 Welcome to the site, Bo. Fantastic timing. I'll be in the Richmond area for four weeks starting January 8th. I was hoping someone up there could fill me in on: 1) Are there any good fly tying/fishing shops? 2) Is the weather warm enough to fish, or should I just plan on tying? 3) Are there places to bank fish during the Winter months? mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2017 Just couldn't stay up until midnight. Finished with the site and went to bed. I slept through all the neighborhood pyrotechnics.
Powershooter 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2017 Well , not sure of any stand alone shops , some stores carry fly tying material. The Basspro here is where I go hang out and tie . They have a free fly tying class starting on January 10th at 6:30 pm . I will be there with them . The weather recently has been warm enough, especially the James river . Yes , there are plenty places to bank fish depending on what your after . You stop by the fly class and I'll fill you in on everything.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2017 Very cool. I didn't see that PBS in Ashland. I looked it up. 25 miles from where I'll be ... it will depend on when my class ends, but I will try to make that evening! Thank you

Check out green top in atlee, just north of Richmond and and a few miles south of the Bass Pro. Those two places are the best (marginal) for materials. The guys at the Bass pro fly shop are pretty helpful and locally knowledgeable. The bass pro in Ashland is probably the best big box store fly shop I've ever seen. The first full-service fly shop from Richmond is the South River Fly shop in Waynesboro, probably an hour from Richmond, I don't know for sure, never drive there from Richmond. Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2017 Well that explains why when I go to Richmond to visit my daughter I can't find a fly shop anywhere. I googled it one time while visiting Careytown (I think that's the correct spelling)and the map showed a shop one block off the main walking area. I walked to the location and found a house with no signs of a fly shop anywhere. I guess I'll stop looking. Welcome.
