The left one suits me better, has fat, but the shape exact color of bugs and shrimp vary from one water to another. I have tied them with a plain grey wool, a pink/grey wool, an amber wool and a couple others in past years. My latest with a wool similar to the one mentioned here;

A previous thread that might be of interest http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=80757

and on another forum, comparisons; http://classicflyrodforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=85951

I went through pretty much all of the Google search results, including the two you mentioned. Many different schools of thought, and many different tying methods, as well. The ones I tied just have the wire; I think I'll try some Pink thread underneath for the next ones, since the Patons isn't quite as pink as the Jamieson's .

In the end, the KB is another easy pattern to , with minimal materials... right up my alley!

Buy Berroco UAF1214. It is a dead on substitute for the original Chadwick's 477 yarn. I have the Jamieson's Spindrift Oyster and Berroco UAF1214 and they are different per the link that tjm posted. The poster is Phil Anderson, a Wisconsin fly tyer and friend. He has a card of the original Chadwick's 477 yarn. Here are some of his comparison photos.

I think it is still available as Berroca 6214.The description of Berroca 1214 and 6214 color is "Steel Cut Oats"

A comparison of Chadwick's yarn (bottom) and UAF1214 (top) as each appears on a card:

I agree with tjm, the one on the left I like better. The one on the right comes to far down the bend.

Both will catch fish. You have a good start. Keep at it, you will improve. Look at the examples Silvercreek posted and use those for a benchmark.

Again, nice start.

SilverCreek, that exact yarn is no longer available, https://berroco.com/yarns/berroco-ultra-alpaca-fine. I saw Phil's thread on Clark's board about a year ago and searched for 1214 for a few months with no success. In the end I bought Berroco Ultra Alpaca 6214 Steel cut oats- the color is very close I think, having never seen the other yarns except in pictures. https://berroco.com/yarns/berroco-ultra-alpaca

The difference in the two Berroco yarns is in the fiber make up: UAF is 50% Superwash Wool, 30% Nylon, 20% Super Fine Alpaca and the UA is 50% Super Fine Alpaca, 50% Peruvian Wool. Chadwick's is 85% wool / 15% nylon.So I have no idea if the nylon is key or not.

Like I said I have tied and fished a few similar bugs made with other yarns over many years, I simply went by my interpretation of Sawyer's description of the yarn and bought yarns that I thought similar that were available where I was, long before internet and widespread information about the killer bug, so I was fascinated by Phil's work. (to this day I have never met anyone else that had read Sawyer's book, I borrowed it in the late '70s and made copious notes and drawings that I still have)

I would send you a sample of the BUA 6214 for comparison if you want.

Thanks for the Replies!

Yeah, looks like I went too far down the bend with the 2nd one. Practice makes [more] perfect!

I also couldn't find Berroco locally, like the Jamieson's Oyster.

Next step... pink thread under the wire & wool!
