Gene L 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 They're Mustad, size 16, I believe 1612 is the style. These are old hooks, about 3x strong, and maybe 1x short (but maybe not). Marked Round bowed hooks, ringed bronze. Any ideas of what flies I could tie on these antiques?
mikechell 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 I looked them up, based on your numbers/description ... and no pictures. Do you have a picture of one of those hooks?
Gene L 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 The reason you don't see a description is because they've been long out of production. I'll see what I can do on a picture. Not sure I have the equipment to do so.
Kentuckysteve 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 They would be great for carp flies. Well i just re read and seen they are size 16 so nix the carp flies.
flytire 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 Possibly a 1608? There's photo of that one
Gene L 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 Looks kinda like a 1608, possibly heavier.
Gene L 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 That is them. Upon second examination, they're not as stout as I remembered, but I think short. Probably 2x stout. I tied up a starling/red with one, kinda small for a soft-hackle, but it didn't take long. So I've got 99 left.
onebadmofo 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 I bought a box of these at a yard sale a few years ago. They were all just scattered in the box. The box is an old lure box I believe. I think I paid 3 bucks for them, with there being about 1500 hooks.
phg 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2017 Short bodied nymph (no bead head) or egg patterns. Think of them as a wide gape, 1x short hook. I generally find I get better hookups on smaller flies that have wide gapes.
