  1. Bit late to this thread, but I thought this might help someone else. You could try brushing your thread wraps with color preserver that rodbuilders use to keep the color before applying clearcoat to the wraps. To my knowledge is does darken slightly, but keeps it from going completely dark.
  2. Thanks, I like the movement of Mylar in a baitfish imitation, but I am of the opinion that the reflectivity of an actual baitfish is much lower than an imitation made from all flashabou material provides. Things like Bucktail, craft fur etc., do indeed move in the water, but not to the degree that flashabou does. Of course, many, including me, just use a strip or two as a highlight, but I wanted to try an all flash fly design. The patina tinsel above would be perfect if in a hank form, and I will likely just order some spools to test my idea. So far the patina spools are the best option I’ve seen, and at least I know that is made! Thanks Folks, Craig
  3. Hello, I was wondering if any of you have come across a matte version of flashabou? Basically the same but without the shine. I did find some magnum flashabou in matte gold, but that would be too big for my purposes, and obviously only gold. Spanflex and plastic raffia both still have gloss to them. The best I’ve been able to come up with is to use thin rubber legs, but would really like something more like the qualities of the Mylar in flashabou. May be a wild goose chase, Thanks, Craig
  4. Thanks Guys, A few of you saw that I was looking for colored thread that would go translucent. Thank you very much for your suggestions, I guess I’ll try a couple of the flosses. I just hate to pay $7-10 for silk like Dean or Yli per spool if I’m trying to do a classic fly. cheers! Craig
  5. Thanks, but I was wanting to do more of a colored variegated effect. Like using brown and primrose Pearsalls silk would do.
  6. Hello, I was hoping some of you might share your experiences with threads that go sort of translucent when wet or clear coated. Obviously lighter colors would be more translucent, and thinner threads as well. But have any of you found a particular brand that goes translucent? I know traditional silk will, and something like body quill starts translucent, but any others? I’m looking for something that will show off a silver underbody. Thanks, Craig
  7. Hello, I’m starting to experiment with different hooks for different subsurface patterns. My question is that since proportions (which can be up to oneself anyway of course) are largely based on the hook, should it vary based on the changes of hook selection. I.E. if I’m using a size 12 short shank hook in theory it should have the length of a 14 while everything else remains the same. So if you base a tail length on that would you do it the length of a size 12 or 14? I realize it might be more relevant issue for a dry fly as you are concerned with how it will lie. I’m thinking if I’m trying to imitate a size 12 nymph, I should use a size 12 proportion even if hook length changes. Of course you could say use a size 10 short shank, but then you might have heavier wire and a different gape. I go round and round in my head, and have just been doing what looks good to me, but am wondering what is “correct”. Thanks, Craig
  8. Hello, I've been unable to find the clear domestically, and shipping from overseas is expensive. I found a vinyl sign place that had this sheets, and got some fluorescent colors that work well as far as the fiber optic effect, but the clear I got is just grey on the edge. I realize flourescents are brighter, but my "clear" is dark gray on the edge. I was hoping someone had tried the real stuff in clear, to find out if it does maintain some "edge glow" effect. If so then I guess i'll have to put up with importing it. Thanks! Craig
