bigtroutak 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2018 Hey All - After almost ten years of membership im making my first post. I took several years off of tying and fishing in general due to health issues and im just now really getting back in the swing. Im in western AZ and am still trying to figure the whole warmwater thing out but ive managed to pick up a nasty addiction to chasing carp so im looking for all the tips and tricks I can get at the vice and on the water. Great forum, great members , thanks for having me!

mikechell 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2018 Welcome to the active side of the site, bigtroutak. No Common Carp here in Central Florida, so I don't tie for them. But you've possibly seen some of the several threads about them. I've got a sister who lives in Yuma. If you're close to Lake Havasu ... you can also chase record breaking Redear Sunfish. Thanks for the welcome! Yessir Havasu has been my home water for several years now. I thought I had caught some large sunfish before but last year while kayaking I had one shoot out of the weeds after a fly and that thing was no lie the size of a steering wheel. He was polite enough to give me a peek and wave at my fly as it went by but that was about it.

mikechell 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2018 Contrary to popular belief ... BIG sunfish aren't that easy to fool. Granted, little sunfish will eat anything, but that's because they are schooling fish. Fish in large concentrations are naturally competitive ... first one to the food gets to eat. But the larger they get, the fewer "companions" they have, and the smaller the school. Those big fish in Havasu are loners, or nearly so, and can be as selective as any trout out there. Scoop up some minnows and fry from the water. Tie flies that mimic those as closely as possible. In those clear waters, that's going to be the most common food, thus the big sunfish's preferred forage.
rstaight 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2018 Agree with Mike on this one. Those big sunnies didn't get that size by being dumb.
