Misc bird skins

Recommended Posts

Does anyone use domestic bird feathers. such as mourning dove, urban pigeon, rail, or ??. Just did an internet search for them as used in fly tying and found virtually nothing. Does anyone know of a legal source for the skins; again, internet showed nothing. I would think that what with the abundance of doves and pigeons, they would be available.

Thanks, Bob H

Some pidgeon feathers have been used. Quail grouse duck and geese would be the more common as well as turkey and pheasant for US game birds. As for skins look on eBay or order from stores.

Starling works well for soft hackles. Has been substituted for jungle cock in the past but you can't get the same look.

Domestic birds. I thought you were talking about parakeets, budgies or chickens ...
I have not used these places but they show some birds.

This place lists bob white quail and woodcock among other things http://www.blue-ribbon-flies.com/shop/category/fly_tying_materials/bird_skins_and_feathers/

this one has starling and ruffed grouse http://www.naturesspiritflytying.net/bird-skins.html

this one pictures of many bird skins http://featheremporium.com/full-skins.html
