I use my fingers for flies that are size 14 and larger and a Materelli whip finish tool for flies smaller than 14. There are some exceptions depending on the pattern.

Not all fisherman are liars.........there's just alot of liars who fish.

Was taught to do everything by hand but a couple of months ago I bought a materelli tool to see what all the hype was about. Not real sure if I like it or not.

I used to do some weird knot, that didn`t last long, but steve, AKA Steeldrifter, taught me the half hitch over the phone one night, so that`s what I use. I do it with my finger. Tight lines and good tyin!-redneck

this old dog will be forcing himself to learn a 'new trick' this year.

Our United Fly Tyer season begins September 2. I will, for the sake of those who choose to sit and tie/observe with me, educate myself as to how these things work. Yeah, I know, they make neat heads and all that...

It depends on the fly I'm tying. A big saltwater fly, by hand. A tiny trout fly, with a tool. An atlantic salmon fly I finish it the sam way as you would the wraps in rod building.
Some drink at the fountain of knowledge. Others just gargle.

I use a half-hitch tool to place one half-hitch then use the same tool to apply two whip-finishes. Of course that approach is on flies where I can access the hook eye. On bead head flies etc. I use a whip-finish tool to apply two whips. Take care & ...

I can whip finish by hand before I can find the whip tool on my bench. I have never had one come loose while fishing but under the influence of Wisers Whiskey I have tied my fingers in a knot once or twice...

Learn to whip it by hand wink.gif and you won't have to take an extra tool with you when you tie on a river.

QUOTE (J. Johnson @ Jul 16 2004, 01:57 PM)
How do you finish your fly?

I have the whip finishing tool down pat,
I tie every day for different swaps so that helps the learning curve.

It all depends on the fly the small ones 20-32 several half hitches,
one thing that I use that really helps me is my auto bobbin,
it is spring loaded so the thread stays taunt all the time,
I can grab it a throw in a half hitch reel quick.

I am a big fan of Zap a gap,
a little of this on a half hitch and that is all you need.

I have a home made tool the Dave Whitlock taught me to use
When he came to one of our club meetings.
If you can buy his video do he shows how to do this.,
it is a tooth pick with a peace of mono glued and tied to it.
just before you throw a few wraps on lay the mono on the
head and five wraps around the head cut off the bobbin and take the tag end through the mono loop,
pull the tooth pick and because the mono has wraps over it,
it will pull the tag end under the wraps just like a whip finishing tool.
