Simple Foam Damsel Fly

Recommended Posts

Here is another fishing fly that I keep in the fly box for those times when the dragonflies and damselflies are hovering over the water. Especially effective in the early evening when the Bass are feeding on them. It's a simple pattern and requires minimal material! Do give it a try... Simple Foam Damsel Fly.

Here is a video that is not in the link posted above.... Was fishing one morning and noted Bass feeding on damselflies on the surface. The Bass were little but stil made for a fun morning using a simple fly pattern!

It is a simple and effective pattern. Made the difference this evening. Caught four Bass; three went for a Foam Damsel Fly in white. Had to work pockets in the algae to take two; missed others, and then took one that was near the shoreline. Here is a video clip (PS: Last one - Bass #4 went for a Tube Popper Fly):

Brought a Five Weight Rod but replaced the reel with a 4/5 Weight Echo Ion. Liked the 8/10 Weight for the Switch Rod; decided to get the smaller size reel for the Five Weight! Liked it, too! Started fishing with a Foam Damsel Fly and caught Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass. Did lose one to a decent Bass that broke the tippet. Later, switched to a Tube Popper Fly. Missed several nice looking fish; too slow on the hookset. But, did get two Bass!

... found a pattern - Foam Damsel Flies for the Bass in the local pond. Bass were readily taking the fishing fly in the "flats"... was surprised given the cool temps but for some reason, they were there.

Ended this round with nine Bass, did miss others. Of the nine Bass, one went for the Near Deere; eight went for the COAF Foam Damsel Fly. Fun stuff!Today's Video.

Tested a new fly rod today - Eagle Claw Fish Skins Fly Rod in a 5 weight, 9' length, and two pieces. Had a fun time catching Bluegill and little Bass. Did get one Bruiser Bluegill; posted it on the Fishing Bulletin Board! Liking the rod; not bad for $59.95! Today's Video. Foam Damsel Fly was key again today!

Tested a new pattern - a Damsel Fly Variant. Uses sparkle braid for the tail, foam and grizzly hackle. Caught several nice looking Bruiser Bluegill. Also, had to deal with lots of wind, luckily the wind was in our favor in some places - casting with a strong tailwind gets some nice long distance casts! Overall, liked this variant!

Variant was the go to pattern on a quick trip today! Had the Wine Cork Micro Fly Rod handy in the car and hit a nearby pond. Caught two Bass – one went about 13″ in size and the other was a fingerling. Fun stuff! Today's Pictures.
