Dble Haul 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2004 If you can pick up the most recent edition of American Angler, there's an article by John Likakis that's one of the best I've ever seen on the subject. It has wonderful images and great text to accompany them. I'm not trying to take the easy way out with your question, but this article will answer your question very thoroughly. Guest Report post Posted January 8, 2004 Likakas is suppose to be out with a new book on deer hair bugs next month. Dave
Guest Report post Posted January 8, 2004 that book is already out, if you go to buy.com it is under 10 bucks. I would first ask our esteemed smallihunter if he carries it! john
Irish 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2004 I second the article by John. The only thing better than the article is to see him do in person. Irish
Guest Report post Posted January 12, 2004 packing deer hair nicely comes from practice and patience. I personally use only my fingers...but the end of a ball point pen works as a great packer and will not cut your thread like traditional brass packers will. Also, after you spin and pack each clump of hair, add a couple wraps of thread to help hold it in place. You may even consider adding a thin drop of some CA adhesive (superglue) to the thread to hold the wrap nice and tight. Quality hair helps spinning and packing the hair, as well. The most important thing about spinning hair is finger and thread control. You often have to work with a lot of thread tension to make the hair flair and to tie off the packed clumps...it comes with trial and error and a bit of patience. We had an excellent discussion of deer hair on the site a few months back and members posted several very in depth links to help our fellow tiers...I think OSD may have provided one of the most in depth articles on the subject that I have seen...I will try to find it...if anyone comes across it, please post a link!
