YoungEagle started following spinner wings, What brand of thread do you use?, fly tying pattern software and and 2 others
-
Uni thread 6/0 and 8/0 for all my trout flies. Still have some old monocord from Universal Vise (company is now out of business) that I use for anything larger than a size 10.

Storing your hackle, the large saddles, capes, etc.

I store all my necks in the original zip lock bags, then in a rubbermaid container that seals all the way around similiar to the one Joe uses in the post above. Never had a problem in 20+ years of tying. -
Have you ever thought about where companies like Hareline and Spirit River get their feathers and hides? When you walk into your local fly shop or when you order from J Stockard, some material is easy to tell where it came from. I buy some Mustad hooks or I pick up a spool of Uni Thread. No doubt where these were produced. I know Whiting raises the chickens that we purchase when we buy a neck. If I pick up a package of mallard flank, how did Spirit River obtain those feathers? Have you ever thought about it? I'm assuming they come from ducks that were harvested by hunters. Does anyone know? How about Emu, African Goat, Guinea, Golden Pheasants, and other animals that are not usually native to the U.S.?

I mainly use white hen or spakle wing

You confirmed what I suspected, 36890s aren't the ticket for nymphs. Thanks for the pointers...
-
Maybe I should clarify. I use Mustad 36890 for most of the Great Lakes Salmon flies I tie. I was wondering what model number(s) you usually use for Steelhead nymphs?

What hooks do you guys usually prefer for Steelhead nymphs? I generally tie on Mustad hooks, but am open to buying other brands.

Another vote for the other category. I just picked up a Peak rotary vise from Bass Pro - my first store bought vise. Up to this point I have tied on a vise my dad made for me 20 years ago. I must say I like using the rotary option and the Peak seems very well built. The folks at Peak were pleasant to deal with to boot.

Just a thought Steeldrifter, maybe the other forum can be renamed "Classic Salmon and Steelhead Tying"

Another request for someone to burn a DVD (I'll pay postage and a little extra to make it worth the effort) My connection just is too slow to download.
