  1. The Veniard dyes work best for me.
  2. I don't tie a lot of the flies mentioned. Would they be able to use bass bugs?
  3. When packing the deer hair with a hair packer, use your opposite hand (left in my case, since I'm right-handed), placed behind your first (rear-most) bunches of deer hair, to apply the same amount of pressure that you are applying with the hair packer. Doing this will prevent your skirt and tailing material from being pushed down the bend of the hook. It will also prevent you from bending hooks. Using this technique, it really doesn't matter how heavy of a hook you use. Hope this helps. Steve.
  4. Thanks for the nice comments. I really appreciate them. JSzymczyk: My fly is tied on a Mustad 3366.
  5. For you guys that have already received your copy, on what date did you place your order? You should have received a confirmation email on the date that you placed your order. Just curious if my copy should be arriving soon. Thanks, Steve.
  6. Thanks for the nice compliments on the diver. I'm looking forward to seeing the magazine.
  7. Matt, If you are using bucktail, and none of the other suggestions help, you might try this to keep the hair from spreading around the hook shank. Hold the bucktail near the hook shank where you want to tie it in, and take a single thread wrap around just the bucktail (not the hook shank). Take the next wrap around both the hook shank and the bucktail and continue binding it down to the hook. This should keep it from spreading around the hook shank. You might also try adding a little head cement to the bucktail before tying it in. Hope this helps, Steve.
  8. Isonychia, I haven't received anything from J. Stockard. Did you receive it via email or postal mail? Steve.
  9. Hi, I'm from Grafton, WV. Which part of the state are you from? Steve.
  10. Congratulations and thanks to all of the participating tyers and voters. This is a really cool contest, and it really helps my cabin fever when the weather around here is too nasty to do much outdoors. The level of talent of the members of this forum is amazing to me. Will - Thanks a lot for all of the work you do for this site, both with the FTOTY contests and the day-to-day behind-the-scenes stuff that must be done to keep the site up and running. I really enjoy your site. shadyvito - Not exactly sure what you're asking, but both of the bass bugs that I submitted were tied by stacking whitetail deer hair. Take care all, Steve.
  11. Hello, Does anyone have an idea of when the results of round 1 of the voting will be posted? I would imagine that the vote counting is a fairly automated process. Just curious. Steve.
  12. blueraven, Thanks for the advice. I already sent them back. I could not imagine that 3 DVD players and my PC were all wrong. Take care, Steve.
  13. Thanks for the info. These DVDs do have graphics on them, so that might be the problem. I've tried them on 3 DVD players and my PC, and have the same problem on each. I've also given them a good cleaning, and that didn't help either. I'm going to send them back, and if the replacements have the same problem, I'll contact Chris. Thanks again, Steve.
  14. I received 2 Chris Helm Fly Tying DVDs for Christmas: "Perfect Pike Patterns" and "Panfish Flies That Work". For some reason, both of them freeze up frequently, and are unusable. I was wondering if anyone else had had the same problems with these DVDs. Thanks, Steve.
