  1. Thanks guys for the ideas to use paint & shaving brushes instead of the specialty fly tying tails. I'm sure the quantities will be MUCH GREATER and cheaper than the others. I'll definitely try them. I appreciate the reply's. Thanks falconsprint
  2. Futzer I also use the Micro-Fibbets, I like them very well. I just am courious about the super tails. I did a google search before posting the question but did not find anything. By the way, I have used Rob Mclean's quills for the quill bodied flies and love them. Thanks for the replys. falconsprint
  3. I have read a couple of fly receipts that call for tying in super tails. What are super tails, and where do you get them. Last are they worth the trouble finding them. Thanks falconsprint :dunno:
  4. I am fairly new at tying flies. I think I have some of the procedures down fairly well, EXCEPT FOR WINGS. I have tried matched feathers, left & right. I tried synthetic material, works fairly well but seem too wide at the hook. I believe I have seen demo videos use hen hackles that are more rounded then the rooster. I do have any of these feather types, are the worth getting? If anyone can help me and give any advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks :dunno: falconsprint
  5. Thank you to all. I got a lot of information. I checked the links and all. I appreciate all of the input. flaconsprint
  6. As a novice, I continue to investigate as to what materials to buy for the flies. I will tie flies in preparation for the spring Trout season. Now I'm finding out that there are so many choices for feathers (hackle). I guess there rooster and hen feathers. There is a cape, saddle and neck. I find out you must use different materials for dry vs. wet flies. Plus different feathers for different hook sizes. I plan on tying assorted flies for different hatch stages. Someone already gave me a list of hatches that are good to tie in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Is there somewhere I can get this data or can someone please let me know, what to use with what size & type of feathers to get for dries and wet flies. Thanks falconsprint P.S. I'M SO CONFUSED!
  7. Thanks to: peregrines CoachBob Hairstacker Thanks for your time and input. It is very much appreciated. falconsprint & Louis (#1 grandson)
  8. I posted a topic about fly life cycle. I recieved a few, very informative replys and i'm grateful for that. One of the people that replied suggested that maybe I could impose on the experts for a list of the top 20-list of basic, non-complicated fly patterns for my area. I live in Southwestern Pennsylvania. My grandson and I Fish in the tailwaters of the Youghiogheny Dam, the Yough river in Confluence with the Cassleman, down to Ohiopyle and the Dunbar Creek. I hope this isn't asking for too much, but if I don't have to reinvent the wheel, GREAT. I would appreciate the help of fellow fly fishermans experience. THANK YOU! FalconSprint
  9. I want to thank you all for taking the time to type all the information about fly stages. There is plenty of information to study. I printed the info out and going to sit down and read. This sure looks like a good start in understanding the life cycle. THANKS TO ALL P.S. I did say I lived in South Western Pennsylvania and fish the tailwaters of the Yougheny River, Ohiopyle, and Dunbar Creek. VERY BEAUTIFUL and well stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish Commision.
  10. I'm new at tying. I'm going to try and get ready for spring opening day in South Western Pennsylvania. Could someone tell me, in easy terms, what are the development stages of flies? What type of fly do you tie for the first stage, second stage, etc? For example is the first stage a larve and would you tie a nymph, (wet fly) and so on? This would sure clear things up for me. Thanks
  11. I really am interested in starting fly tying. I haven't started as of now. A friend of mine GAVE me a kit he recieved and never tried. It is a Warsi fly tying kit. After browsing for hours, I found ot I believe the vice is a Thompson A vise. I have watched a lot of tying videos and NEVER saw what the little round wound sprins around the vice, connected together with hooks on the end. WHAT THE HECK IS THIS THING FOR? All information on this vice would be appreciated. Dosen't look high tech, probably not much to add. Thanks in advance FalconSprint
