New Fly Rod Lure

Recommended Posts

Fly rod lures were very popular until the end of WWII when returning soldiers from Europe brought back spinning reels..That kind of ended the fly rod lure run.Ive built wooden Swimbaits and crankbaits for years.I thought Id give a modern twist to a old lure style..The Lure is made from Balsa...I designed this one for bass..It casts well on my 10 weight and can be thrown on a 9.This lure weighs less than some big dreamers do when wet..Nathan

Hey nathan, that looks pretty good to me. Back when I was a kid I remember those fly rod lures. I know that Arbogast made some as well as Helin and probably a few others. I had a fly rod size flatfish, a hula popper, and a jitterbug. Yours look great and I'm sure it would work. Maybe those lures will make a comeback.

That's nice. A little bit heavy for me since I seldom fish anything heavier than a 6 wgt these days. I made quite a few out of foam a few years ago but haven't used them in a while. I found that the lipped ones fished better off and intermediate or sinking line.

Outstanding work my man!

When I first moved to Texas in the early 80s there wasnt much out there about fly fishing for Bass... no YouTube or Internet. Just books magazines and fly tying clubs.

People used to come up to me and tell me theres no trout in this lake...🤔

My redneck fishing buddy was always out fishing me so I decided to try to re-create some of his lures with deer hair.

These are the results.... all of these are at least 25 years old.

We've had balsa, deer hair. These are a couple of the ones that I made out of foam over the years

From my experience it's not any different than a foam popper good expect to use with a fly rod for bass less than a big bunny hair streamer with lead eyes after it gets wet.

It depends on the size and what it's tied on. The hula popper and the spook are definitely 7 or 8 wgt "flies". The divers I can throw with my 6 wgt, and the double prop one can be thrown with either a 5 wgt or 6 wgt. I've got some spooks, hula poppers, tiny torpedoes, and a couple of others that I tied specifically for pan fish that can be used with my 5 wgt or 6 wgt. Not the best picture, but this is a box I put together for a trip to Canada a few years ago. The smaller ones are at the bottom of the box.
