Do you guys think that a 4 wt rod is too light for the harbor?
-
All right peeps. Ive just started flyfishing, so treat me like ive never flyfished before. Alright, hypethetically, i go fishing in a harbor. Lets make it Dana Point Harbor in southern california. I have sinking fly line, which is 6 IPS. Attached to that, i have 5-10 ft of 6lb regular monofilament fishing line. I have a saltwater fly attached to that. Is this a good setup for harbors? What type of flies should i use?? My friend told me that when the fly hits the bottom, i should start stripping my line(taking it in). ANY additional thoughts would really help, remember, ive just started flyfishing, i basically dont know what im doing lol.

i feel like an idiot now because of the glasses lol

Funny u said that dave. I was taking apart a professionally made midge that was tied by my friend frank who is sponsored by diawa, and noticed it smelled like fingernail polish. I took the ones apart pictured above. o and lanvaettir, i dont think ill need those glasses lol. Im only 14 and my vision hasnt gone yet lol.

all i know about wet flies is that they sink lol

Ive never been flyfishing in streams before (only stillwater nymphing) but if i were going i would use this type of setup: (if im wrong, dont blame me lol) I would use taperd leader attached to my flyline. I dont know what kind of flys to use but with dry flies i dont think it matters how long your leader is. (if im wrong someone correct me) Sry i cant be of more help

What materials do i need to tie these zebra midges? Also, should i use waxed thread or regular thread? if i use regular thread should i coat them with a special type of glue??
-
For trout, i look for shallow areas like flats. In my area (laguna niguel lake, ca) u fish with your midge about 1 ft off the bottom.

If a hook bends, never bend it back and reuse it. The hook can weaken this way, and part of it might fall off. just use a new one. I use eagle claw hooks which never seem to bend on me.

i dont think your beta fish could tell if you are making bad flies or not......lol
