Mike West 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2019 Before all the synthetics came into play almost every nymph I tied had mink or muskrat in it
tjm 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2019 The guard hair from the tail makes excellent tails or hair wings and the fur from the body makes good dubbing. Play with it a bit to see what shades of color you have and use it for for all dubbed bodies in/near those shades. Many nymphs, flymphs and dries can be approximated with mink. Exact color and texture will vary from mink to mink and with the place on the body you take the fur from. I have substituted mink for muskrat, beaver, mole, opossum, gray wool yarn and other similar materials. Here is a search of other threads on the forum about mink; https://www.bing.com/search?q=+mink+fur+site%3Awww.flytyingforum.com&qs=n&form=QBRE&sp=-1&pq=mink+fur+site%3Awww.flytyingforum.com&sc=0-35&sk=&cvid=6911F81F4BF54EE58723CFB40B3F53A1
Charlie P. (NY) 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2019 Probably anything calling for muskrat or otter would work with mink. I find the Rosborogh Casual Dress a VERY versatile nymph for trout, panfish and bass. Just a fuzzy blob with a darker head - but all the fur gives it action in the water. I have even tied this one with hair from a silver Maine Coon Cat. ;-) And he would sit on the gunnel of our sailboat and watch me use it! https://news.orvis.com/fly-fishing/video-tie-casual-dress Rosborogh Muskrat is similar but with a beard and no tail. https://news.orvis.com/fly-fishing/video-tie-muskrat-nymph
