xvigauge 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2018 While doing some experimenting in various aspects of tying flies, as all of us often do, I found a neat way to make a somewhat shinny but slender body when tying soft hackle wet flies. Use any kind of tying or sewing thread you want or have. After winding the thread on the hook, I tie in a strand of fluorescent monofilament fishing line (around 12 lb test) and wrap it tightly to the eye. The fly then has a realistic sheen and the color of the thread underneath shows through. I discovered this when I wanted to tie a purple body with purple floss then realized I didn't have any. I used some purple sewing thread instead, but it was dull and just didn't look right. For the heck of it, I wrapped on the mono and it made a big difference. This may be a technique that has already been used for years, but I am not aware of it. Just thought I would pass it on. Joe
