Martiandrummer, Howdy; I know some chickin haulin Truck Drivers that would trip all over themselves to get some of those. You may have seen'em goin' down the road with lights ALL OVER the truck or maybe just a rubber chickin hangin' off the back doors... just sayin' hankaye

Howdy All; This is kind of a sore subject with me. Most of the books that I have perused and read and the you-tube that I have viewed have, almost to a fault, overlooked or haven't thought about addressing NOMENCLATURE (Fly tyer speak), the language of the tyer. When someone first starts out ON THEIR OWN, they don't know a barbule from a hackle, Very rare is it to find a video to show it or explain it. Most folks presume that it is common knowledge. It ain't..... Which side of a feather is "The Good side" Took me almost a year to figure that one out! Someone NEEDS to write a book about THAT kinda stuff. Then we can say "LET THE TYING BEGIN!!!!!" I'm done now ... hankaye

Markbob, Howdy As I'm a learner about most of these things you can take this or leave it. I was reciently offered a copy of Roger Fogg's "A Handbook of North Country Trout Flies" (copyright 1988) at the bottom of page 69 Last sentence then continues on page 70, top paragraph Mr. Fogg states; "There may be a great deal of debate as to the correct proportion of hackle fiber length to body length when dressing a fly. Personal preferences may well play a part and indeed, I do find that I will vary the size of feather according to the specific pattern I am dressing. For example, a beetle imitation would seem to call for a short-fibered hackle while a fly imittating an ephemeral adult would suggest a rather larger hackle. As a working compromise for the average pattern, my advise would be to selecta hackle with a fiber length approximately 1-1/2 to 2 times the length of the body. This advise, of course, depends entirely on your judgement in getting the body length correct, but that matter ought to be clear enough by now." Hoping this helps with the proportions. Howdy Chris; Sounds like your Uni-Lak is a lacquer based product (paint), that has started to dry out (the thinner is evaporating when you leave the top off during the tying. Or,... you maybe you didn't get the tops on tight at some time or another. A drop or 2 of lacquer thinner added to the dry containers may help. The drying out is also a sign of the impending end of Effective shelf-life. As someone on another forum is fond of saying;" Your milage may vary...". Good luck, hankaye

Howdy; I'm new to all this stuff as well. found a State based Forum that has been helpin' me out quite abit. Saved ya some leg work and found this; http://www.easttexasflyfishers.org/index.htm they are part of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF), chances are you might find some help there as to gear, places to fish (ya might already know those), what works best where. All that kinda stuff ...happy searchin'

Howdy; It's hard enough to get started tying flies without some BLOCKHEAD just pointing out what they think are the mistakes a novice has made.... and I know that not everyone needs to hold someone hand when they don't do something "perfectly" especially when it's their first attempts or durn close to it. Showing support and encouragement and a slight amount of criticism is far better to help cultivate a budding tyer. The link was nice (hold in front of student and point to the proportions reinforcing that you know that of which you speak). Sure, it may be wonderful to be blessed with an alligator tough hide, not everyone is. The other posters that answered prior to your very curt and harsh statements were perhaps true. I just think that you may have phrased your thoughts in a more thoughtful manner. Myself, … I’m to new to fly tying to offer any kind of criticism, I can only comment about how much I do like their appearance and, that I think they will catch fish when used. I’m done now… hankaye

That was some of the stuff that was driving me nutz. They give ya a list of stuff to tie with but don't tell ya ( beginners any way), what the parts of what, the stuff is from. That's why I have been so happy with the answers that I have gotten here. The folks here have actually taken the time and expended the brain power to think back to when they were starting out and the explanations that were necessary to understand 'what's what'. Like describing a circular staircase without using your hands...( ya have ta know what concentric means).

Go grab a stick ... beat-up a tree ... move on.

peregrines, you're right... In my opinion a ton is a underestimate . At the moment I am fishing for Panfish. When I return to Utah I will be fishing for Trout as well, I'll never give up my panfish. I have read that there are several patterns that work well for both. I have also become interested in the Soft Hackles and Flymphs? They look to be deceptive as to the skill required to build. Howdy all; Am in temporary quarters (Ohio as opposed to my home of Utah), for a leagle matter. Started fly fishing while here and am interested in learning to tie. Have realized that I have absolully NO idea of what ya'll are talking about. Have popped this question on a few other forums and keep being told to go find a fly shop and ask questions. Nearest one is 100 miles away. bit far to go to ask some questions. Could/would someone here be kind enough to explain what some of materials are. Like the different parts of feathers, animal parts, and so on. Like trying to break a code. Thanks for your time and answers, hankaye
