Don't know who came up with this Humpy variation on the original but it's a cool fly.

 

hook -Dai Riki 305 #14

thread - Danville 6/0 black

butt - Danville 6/0 red

tail/shellback - deer hair

abdomen - peacock herl

rib - tying thread

hackle - grizzly

 

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark, wrap halfway down bend and create a bump, brush with Sally

clean, stack, measure ( gap width past bend) a small clump of deer hair; tie in, fold butts back over tail, half hitch/trim thread

start black thread, create a loop and wrap to tail

tie in peacock; twist/wrap to 2/3 mark, tie off/trim

slight twist to deer hair, pull forward; tie down/trim buts

What is your photo setup?

8yr old (going on 9) Canon Powershot SD750 p&s. Ott tying light and 2 cheap clamp-ons for illumination.

How about the neutral background?

It's a sheet of grey 2mm foam I lean against the base of the Ott light; all pretty low-tech.
