  1. If only I had stayed up last night replying to all of the active posts on the forum... sigh... next time...
  2. Somewhat bummed I am short of the 100 post minimum....Too sick today to make 70 more posts today...haha
  3. I am so excited, I just got back from picking up like a dozen fly-tying books for $30. They are all from the 70's, but full of pictures, patterns, step-by-steps, and all kinds of other info. I have found a lot of info online, but for me I like to be able to have it at my fingertips when I am at my desk. Highlights for me include Index of Orvis Fly Patterns- Volume 1 and 2 1978 and 1987 Trout and Salmon fly index- Surette 1974 Universal Fly Tying Guide- Dick Stewart Western Trout Fly Tying Manual- Jack Dennis 1974 The Second Fly-Tyer's Almanac- 1974 Also included was a bunch of fly casting/fishing books, including one by Lefty Kreh. Let's just say this morning was like Christmas all over again!
  4. I think that getting into it is a big step, and a major difference from spin/bait fishing. Nobody in my family flyfishes anymore (Grandpa and Uncle have in the past) so when it came time when I decided to learn when I was about 16 I picked up a $40 Walmart special flyrod with a dozen flies. It got me into the sport, and I caught quite a few bass.... Now I am about to turn 21, living in a frigid Minneapolis, counting down the days until openers in MN, MI, WI, tying a dozen flies on Friday and Saturday nights, watching troutbums when I need to relax, and moving to West Yellowstone to fish all summer again. It seems like with my generation, affordability is a big part of the equation. Most college kids can't go buy the equipment to get into fly-fishing with the risk that they won't enjoy it-and there aren't a lot of people of the same age that are into it. You can go out and buy a spinning combo for $30 and it will work just fine, or better yet borrow a fishing buddies; this type of thing doesn't seem as doable within the fly-fishing world (at least here in MN). I am so happy that I got into this (really serious in the last 1.5 years, tying for about 6 months now), and judging by the average of this demographic I have a lot of time at it still.... Thanks for everything on this site!
  5. This is the best idea I have for white-tipped. Here in Wisconsin we get some with white tips like this, but this picture is of a Merriam's Turkey. I think they are generally found out west. That is my best guess for the white-tipped part.
  6. I am also a full-time student, graduating next December... Hopefully there still those things called jobs then, and I can find one I might enjoy... Tie every evening to chill myself out...
  7. Anyone have any exciting trips coming up? I will be heading over to WI for the opening of the early season. Then come May I will be heading to West Yellowstone, MT until September to 'work' for the whole summer. I did it last summer, and this is one last 'fun' summer....Life consisted of work, discussing fishing, fishing, drinking a few beers, and sleeping. Can't wait. What does everyone else have upcoming? Any exotic destinations to fish?
  8. I won't be going this weekend, but will be when the show comes to Minneapolis in a few weeks. Can't wait!
  9. Just stumbled upon this and looked at the entries and wow, I know my patience was nowhere near you guys when I was under 16. Impressive. Andrew
  10. Thanks for your help, but you were wrong on all 3 guesses. My last name is Orthober and my University ID/Email is ortho004-Makes remembering all my info easier to have it as my screen name
  11. So I have been doing pretty well with the materials that were included with my starter kit, but now I am running them pretty low, and trout season is coming quick... As I am looking for new materials, where should I look (not really any fly shops around here that I have found). I would prefer to buy stuff online if that is possible. Also, is there a way that I can get a variety of common materials, rather than buy them all separately? I would like to, for instance, get a variety of colors of chenille, or hackle, or maribou rather than just a lot of one kind... Keeps things more interesting. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help.
  12. 4 points huh... going to be an interesting game for the steelers if that is the case
  13. Can you buy that box off their website? I can't find it anywhere... I could be blind though...
  14. I was really excited to see this too, as I have yet to find one that I really like... But found the same disappointment that you did James...
  15. Here is what I did tonight. Nothing special- just tying something that looks kinda pretty for a non-fly-fishing friend who gave me the pheasant and turkey feathers. My goal was to emphasize those feathers as those are what he gave me, and I am going to give it to him as a thank you. Any comments are appreciated (message me), I have been at this for like a month and so far have a bunch of wooly buggers and foam beetles to show for it. My first try at just winging it!
