agn54 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2014 Very nice, I really like the clouser. I love mullet patterns and fish many different ones, but this one is my favorite Here is another one that I like
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2014 Good looking flies guys! I don't really have a mullet specific pattern I like, but do tie some gray & white patterns like what you guys are posting. IMO, gray shades over white & olive shades over white can imitate just about any baitfish that swims in fresh or salt waters. I also like the fact that 4 of the 5 pictures you guys posted are older styles. Clousers, Blondes, Deceivers & Bendbacks. Can't go wrong with any of them! Thanks for posting them! Peterjay 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2014 Don't have a specific mullet pattern, but any baitfish imitation in the appropriate size will do the job. My favorite is probably the Tabory's snake fly.
Capt Bob LeMay 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Small and large mullet are a staple in my area - both in the salt and back up inside brackish areas, all the up into pure freshwater (a winter thing in the 'Glades...). Here are a few pics of bugs I've found useful, but first remember that a good old fashioned muddler in darker colors will get a lot of attention in larger sizes... The first bug is a Razor-cut mullet, the head is deer belly hair packed tightly, then razored into shape after the bug is finished. The tail is rabbit over a sparse amount of bucktail in the same color. Once the bug is complete, eyes and all (but before the wire weedguard is bent down into position..) the bug is colored with a Sharpy, then the entire head is coated with FlexSeal... This second group of bugs are all variations on a Woolhead mullet pattern that I worked up to fish a bit deeper waters. The tail is maribou over sparse buktail, the initial body is Body Fur, wound into place then shaped by trimming -the head is wool spun, flared then shaped. Like 90% of the bugs I use they all have wire weedguards (more for snags and mangrove roots than any weeds..). Enjoy - the woolheads shown are on Mustad 34007 1/0 hooks - the Razor-cut is on a 2/0 hook...
utyer 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Thanks for giving me a few other options to try. I will give them a try shortly. Agn, colors, I wouldn't have thought to use, but I will give them a go. Bob, I like the wool head idea, and I have plenty of wool to use.
Philly 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Here's the style I use. Based on Bob Popovics Siliclone. I replaced the wool in the original pattern and replaced it with Polar Fiber Plus or Egg Yarn.
