H.Champagne 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2010 I recently acquired a copy of Hatches II. I live in Minnesota and wanted to investigate the types of Caddis in my area. With a small amount of reading i learned that there are over 1200 species that fall into the "caddis fly" category. To help narrow things down, i looked up many hatch charts online for MN, and found that they all put "Caddis" as one category, with no other descriptions as to what kind of caddis it is. I found one small site that mentioned Speckled caddis as a category along with Caddis. I guess the jist of this is that i just started tying recently and was hoping to find specific info on different species of caddis. With how specific fly tying patterns can be i find it hard to believe that this one type of fly is imitated with such a small selection of common patterns. When digging up patterns for them, most of the descriptions pertain to hair type and not species of caddis. (obviously stage in lifecycle is abundant). ............way to much word vomit.......where does one find more specific information on species of caddis and the patterns associated with them? thanks
Taxon 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2010 H- My suggestion would be that you purchase a copy of Caddisflies by Gary LaFontaine. It is a wonderful book. Although no longer available from the publisher, is available used through Amazon or EBay for under $30.
rockworm 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2010 Here is a link to a program that identifies the caddis from its description and gives patterns to match: http://fishermonk.com/pl/2q_cadd.pl
