KHoss 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2017 Here is a video I did of the process for cleaning and servicing a vintage fly reel I can be kind of intimidating to break down and clean reels, especially older ones that don't have instructions. Let me know what you think on the process
heavynets 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2017 Your video and proceedure is fine, but a little different than I would have done it. Personally, I would have first removed all the dirt and oil with soap and water and a toothbrush. (Vinegar doesn't cut grease nearly as well as soap and water) I would follow the initial cleaning with a few cycles though an ultrasonic cleaner to get into the tight spots. I bought mine at Harbor Freight for cheap. Only then would I use a 50 - 50 vinegar and water mixture, left overnight to remove any rust. After a thorough rinse and drying apply a rust preventive oil on exposed metal and a light grease to bearings.
KHoss 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2017 thanks for the feedback - I need to look into an ultrasonic cleaner - I'll admit i was a bit "gentle" on this one.... most of my experience is with leaded Hardy reels, which are not as forgiving as the enamel reel in the video..
