  1. Hi. Where can I find the link for December Flies from the Vise? The thread can be found in the Fly Tying Bench forum, or the link to the thread has been at the top right of the home page under most recently bookmarked. The fly I'm referring to is near the bottom of page 4 in the thread. Tight lines, bbird
  2. Look at my post in the December Flies from the Vise. My streamer's tail is yellow marabou tied in normally, but the body is grizzly marabou that has been palmered. This may give you an idea of what the different techniques look like on a fly. I love the way palmered marabou pulsates in the water, and the fish seem to like it too. Like tidewaterfly said, you can get rid of the "hump" when tying in marabou as a tail, by continuing your thread wraps all the way to the front of the hook, instead of trimming off the excess at the tie in point. Hope this helps. Tight lines, bbird
  3. Got some Fish Skulls the other day, and I've been trying to come up with a good high-water pattern for the tailwaters around here. Haven't tried them out yet, but I think they'll produce. Hook: TMC 9394 Size 2 Thread: UTC 280 White Tail: Yellow Marabou Wing: Olive Barred Magnum White Zonker Strip Body: Palmered Grizzly Marabou Collar: White Sculpin Wool Throat: Red UV Ice Dub Head: Gold Medium Fish Skull
  4. I had a lot of luck with this pattern on the Frying Pan River, and I'm sure it would work great on other mysis shrimp infested waters. The flash on the underbody seems to be what triggers the bite. Hook: Daiichi 1120 Size 20 Thread: UTC 70 White/Cream Antennae: Natural Mallard Flank Eyes: Mono eyes Thorax/Legs: Polar Dub White Transparent Abdomen/Underbody: UTC Pearl Tinsel Abdomen/Overbody: Clear Micro Tubing Shellback: Loon Hard Head Clear Fly Finish/Epoxy Start your thread at the halfway point of the hook and wind back towards the barb. Tie in 6-8 mallard flank fibers. Wind the thread forward to about 1/3 of the hook shank and tie in the mono eyes. Dub on the polar dub behind the eyes, and then figure 8 around them. You want the abdomen to be about 2/3 of the hook shank, so tie in the micro tubing and tinsel just in front of the eyes. Wrap your thread forward to just behind the eye, and then wrap forward the tinsel and tie it off. (Tried a different setting on the camera to give you an idea of what the flash looks like on the fly.) Then, wrap forward the clear micro tubing using tight wraps. Tie it off just behind the eye. Whip finish, and pick out the thorax to form legs. Form a thin shellback from the eyes to the hook eye using the hard head or epoxy. Hope this turns out okay. Sorry about the pics, they're not that great. A big thanks go to Will for the free stuff. bbird
  5. My flies finally arrived this evening. Great ties everyone! :headbang: Also, thanks for the hooks Mr. Vegas. I'm glad everything turned out all right. -bbird
  6. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve! I can't wait to see what's coming in the mail! :yahoo: All this waiting is killing me.
  7. I just finished voting, and the tiers have really made it hard to pick just one fly from a category. That is one awesome bunch of flies! :headbang: Good luck to everyone, and a big thanks to Will for putting the contest together.
  8. It's a really tough decision to make, but I would probably give up tying. I started tying so I wouldn't have to buy cheap flies tied overseas. I would rather fish with store-bought flies than not fish at all.
  9. Nope, I thought mine would have arrived by now, considering they only took 3 days to ship to Mr. Vegas. I hope they haven't been lost.
  10. Thank you Mr. Vegas; the body is made of dark golden stone stretch tubing that is colored with a brown permanent marker.
  11. Just gonna let everyone know that my flies went out today. Not sure how long they'll take to get there, but let me know when they do.
  12. I guess I'll do a Rubberlegs Golden Stone if that's alright with everyone.
  13. I'm in with some kind of nymph. This will be my first swap also. :headbang:
  14. Houndog is right, the Thunderhead originated in the Smokies. Locally it is a well known pattern, but I guess it loses its fame once you leave the area surrounding the Smokies. Here's how I tie mine.
  15. Somebody should tie up some Thunderheads, the brookies around here love 'em.
