SBPatt 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2017 A vintage Kiwi pattern. hook - Mustad 9671 #6 thread - Danville 6/0 black tail - mallard flank over red hackle fibers rib - oval tinsel silver body - chenille white hackle - red wing - mallard flank throat - mallard flank (not standard but looked cool in a pic I saw so I added it) mash barb, start thread measure (gap width past bend) some hackle fibers; tie in tie some mallard flank over top of the hackle fibers tie in tinsel strip end off chenille, tie in, wrap to within 1 eye width; tie off/trim rib with tinsel; tie off/trim tie in (folded) hackle by tip; wrap, tie off/trim stroke fibers down/back, cover with thread measure (tips to tail) a mallard flank feather; twist between thumb/forefinger to streamline, tie in/trim tie in throat (tips even with hackle); tie off/trim whip finish, SHHAN Regards, Scott Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Kudu 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2017 Nice. I'll try this one. I did manage some fish on a unique smolt or something like that you tied a while back. It had ostriches, tubing and a cone head if I remember correctly. I fish a lot of streamers with full sink line below Lake Cumberland. A large river that is a cold water fishery for 87 miles. Camera is a 10 yr old Canon Powershot SD750 p&s; definitely wasn't their top-of-the-line back in 2007 but it seems to have a decent macro. I have an Ott light with a sheet of grey craft foam behind the vise and 2 cheap clamp-on lamps on either side for additional light. [email protected] 0 Report post Posted February 15 Beautiful fly and no disrespect intended, but if I could offer a suggestion, as I understand what's special about this fly, it needs to fall through the water column, with a slow rocking back and forth, or spiraling down motion, sinking slowly with a movement/giving the impression of a badly injured minnow. If that rocking or spiraling wounded minnow effect is not achieved by the mallard breast feather wing, we have missed the reason to fish this fly.
