Quick Tie - No Herl Griffiths Gnat

20 January 2019 - 01:28 PM

Here is a simple tie for an already simple pattern... it's a Griffith's Gnat less the Peacock Herl. Mainly use this one as a trailing fly to a tandem rigged lead streamer like a Wooley Bugger or Near Deere.

It's fished wet but can be fished dry as well. Tends to do well when "bugs" are emerging have hatched but seem to have not made the final push to fly off... instead they sink and become food for hungry trout!

Recipe:
Size 14-18 dry fly hook
Black Dacron Tying Thread
Grizzly Hackle - long... at least 2" or more in length

Quick Tie - Simple Mop Fly

24 November 2018 - 10:53 AM

Here is simple, quick tie pattern that works well for trout... we have used the pattern in various combinations of dubbing - white, pearl, pink, and orange. For this demo, we opted for White UV Dubbing. However, it can be readily replaced with your favorite color as well as with Glo Bug yarn used in Egg patterns.

Recipe
Size 10 Jig Heads 1/124oz or 1/80oz
White Dacron Tying Thread
Chartreuse Micro Fiber Mop "Nub"
White UV Dubbing

Quick Tie - Rainbow Warrior Midge

10 November 2018 - 10:18 AM

Another quick tie demo of a simple but effective pattern. This one we like to use as a trailing fishing fly to a tandem rig... be it a Near Deere, Wooley Bugger, or similar pattern.

Recipe
Red Dacron Tying Thread
Size 16 Caddis Hook
2.3mm Silver Tungsten Bead
Pheasant Tail Fibers
Pearl Mylar or Tinsel
White and Pink UV Dubbing

Quick Tie - Simple Midge

21 October 2018 - 08:29 AM

Here is a quick tie fishing fly pattern that uses minimal material; for ease of reference, we call it the Simple Midge. Works well on Bluegill, Sunfish, and fingerling Bass. Hope to try it on trout this upcoming Trout Stocking Season!

Recipe calls for:
Peacock Herl
Mallard Flank
Size 16 Caddis Hook (can go up/down as desired)
Black Tying Thread

Micro Fishing Fly Pattern... Simple Quick Tie

08 October 2018 - 11:29 PM

Had fun the other day fishing for little Bluegill and Sunfish using midge patterns and nymphs with the Micro Fly Rod. Was trying for the smallest of fishes but hooks were too large to catch the little fingerlings in the local pond.

Put an order in with TenkaraBum for some micro fishing hooks - sizes 26 and 30. While waiting for the order, decided to take the smallest hook in the fly tying box and tie a couple of Micro Fishing Flies.  Simple pattern - antron fibers, UV Glue, and the hook. That's it!

Below is the quick tie demo of the Micro Fishing Fly in the "large size" - size 22 dry fly hook.
