Patagonia Report

Recommended Posts

All,

I've been dying to share this with folks since I returned on Monday. My family and I were lucky enough to spend 14 days in southern Patagonia and Buenos Aries. I'll do my best to highlight some touristy things we did and more importantly the fishing. A few quick notes; this was a family vacation and not a planned fishing vacation. However, I was lucky to get some days away to fish. We were also traveling with our 3 year old.

Day 1-3 Buenos Aries - This was a great way to break up travel. We saw the mausoleum of Evita Peron, did a street food tour, saw the old apartment for the Pope (they were all very mad he went to Peru and Chile), and toured some museums and local neighborhoods. Wife and I picked up some leather jackets on the cheaper side to us. The dollar is quite strong 19:1.

Day 4-7 Bariloche We did some hiking our first day and the second day was fishing for me. We were in Nauel Huapi National Park. This is the park that the Limay River empties in to. Fished from a boat hitting beautiful waterfall pockets with sinking tips and streamers. The guide Paolo was fabulous and I saw one other fisherman that day. I broke two fish off early in the morning. Being from the East Coast I just muscled the fish a bit more than I should have.

Day 7 - 9 Ushuaia - This is where most folks hop a boat to go to Antarctica. One day we did the penguin colonies with our son and another hiking. I spent another day fishing. Lake fishing again but this time from the shore. The guide gave me a rod with a 25 foot shooting head and asked me to kindly cast 80 ft out in to the lake. Did I mention its always windy in Patagonia? The day did not go well for me. We hooked one fish.

Day 10 - 14 Torres del Paine - We moved countries from Argentina to Chile. I was not impressed with what Chile had to offer. The food was scary looking (I've spent 4 days in the Sierra Nevada range eating only out of a cup so...) and the service just wasn't what it was in Argentina. We did some hiking, saw a glacier, and took in the national park. I had one day fishing on the Rio Serrano for king salmon and brown trout. Did I mention its windy down there? I threw spoons on spinning gear to salmon the size of an F-150. We saw them jumping so they were out there but not interested in what we had to offer, nor the 20 or so other fisherman out that day. We didn't catch a thing. Guide seemed more interested in telling me about helifishing and how much better the fishing was there.

This was a great trip! To those who might be planning a getaway I would recommend Argentina over Chile. Traveling with children was easier than expected. My wife and I are already talking about a return trip to Mendoza, Iguazu, and some other areas we missed. Happy to answer any questions folks might have. If I was doing this trip again I would try to float the Limay in Bariloche, try to make the trip up to Rio Grande in Ushuaia, and would avoid Chile.

Norm,

Thanks for transforming the numbers and letters into pictures, much like you transform materials into beautiful flies. I really enjoy the pictures of your work and appreciate your responses to people's questions.

Tom

Nice report! My mom is from Buenos Aires so a couple years ago after visiting there we decided the make a stop in Bariloche. We fished the Limay River, and this is where I truly got hooked into fly fishing. Caught one fish (on fly) all day, but it was a beautiful 22" wild rainbow trout. After hearing that reel sing and getting a couple line burns, it was over. I was hooked and the addiction hasn't wavered since.

Glad you enjoyed your trip.
