Piker20 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2018 Has anyone set flies into resin for paperweights, keyring etc? I'm struggling to understand how the fly retains it's natural look and doesn't become clogged by the resin.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2018 LOL GOOD QUESTION !!! I've got a paper weight I bought a few decades ago. It's a thistle seed top ... in perfect shape, encased in plastic with no bubbles. There's not a single seed tuft out of place. I still marvel at the beauty of it. My guess is either vacuum assisted or magic. The obvious answer is to see if there's tutorials on YouTube.

flytire 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2018 colin youll have to find the materials in a hobby/craft shop where you live i think the resin would just flow over the fly and encapsulate it. i dont think it will work with a dry fly
feathers5 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2018 Did you try and with a fly? Did you use styrofoam for the mold?
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2018 I'm guessing it's much like lacquering a feather or quill for tying when you don't want the fibers to seperate. Paint the fly with a thin lacquer first and when it dries pour away.
Piker20 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2018 I've seen them set with dry flies in. I'm thinking I'll buy some and give it a go. Can use it for sea shell paper weights too so it won't be wasted.

rstaight 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2018 I had a plant manager who fly fished when was still home in Scotland. His wife took his favorite fly out of his box (silver butcher) and had it made into a resin paperweight.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2018 sandflyx ... those look like they still have enough plastic to shave it down and polish it to show those items much more clearly.
