Where to Wind Soft Hackle with Deer Hair Wings.

Recommended Posts

I want to tie some soft hackles that have coastal deer hair wings - not as thick as the wing of an Elk Hair Caddis. Would you wind the soft hackle - partridge - on top of the front of the wing (as if it were a fluttering caddis) or wind completely in front of the deer hair?

Thanks,

Randy

Either way, depends on your needs. I'd personally be inclined ( assuming wet fishing) to encase the deer hair ends under the thread with a bit of taper, then tie in the soft hackle. Probably because that's how I tie my wet swimming turkey caddis. Leave enough room to form a small head in front of the soft hackle. Fluttering caddis has some deer hair ends protruding out in front of the hackle but these are fished dry usually ( not always).
