9iron 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2014 Looking to tie some flatwings for sea run cuts. From what I've read, regular Whiting saddle feathers are too long and fine (narrow) and Whiting is no longer making their flatwing/steelhead packs. What are you folks using for smaller flatwing flies?
Peterjay 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2014 Check around on Ebay - there's a wide variety of saddles and capes on there - you shouldn't have any trouble finding what you're looking for. Any saddle hackle will do OK if the stiff part of the stem is long enough to keep the fly from fouling - those things can be a nightmare, especially if you're fishing in the wind or the surf. BTW - slim deceivers are every bit as effective as flatwings. The chief advantage to flatwings is that they're pretty.
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 IMO, a lot of the bigger feathers in a Whiting Bugger pack would be fine for tying flatwings. I certainly agree with Peter, and folks caught fish on Deceivers before the flatwings became popular, so it's not like they're the only fly that catches fish.
