A vintage Appalachian pattern from N.C. tyer Newland Saunders. Not to be confused with the Sheep Creek Special; use it as a cranefly, nymph or streamer.

hook Mustad 79580 #6
thread - Danville 6/0 brown
underbody - non-tox wire .030
tail - hen back mottled brown
body - dubbing muskrat/rabbit/squirrel mix (original may have called for woodchuck but my supply is depleted so subbed squirrel)
hackle - hen back mottled brown
wing - hackle tips grizzly

mash barb, cover shank with non-tox; start thread

strip some hackle fibers, measure (gap width past bend), tie in

dub thread/dub tapered body

tie in hackle by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

measure (tips to rear of body) a pair of hackles (back to back)

tie in/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Canon Powershot SD750; Ott + 2 clamp-on lights

The originator of this fly,Newland Saunders, was my Grandpa's cousin... I've kept a few in my fly box for 35 years and have one Newland tied in the late 70's... Basically an Adams wet fly... I tie them on an 8 hook and use rabbit for the body

Welcome to the Sa Squash.  "Bait Fisherman" is equal to "new member".  As you participate (like Rick says) it will change.

On the other hand, if you tick off one of the "big wigs" like Steeldrifter dry.png ... you get mean sayings like mine. laugh.png
