JLHJR 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2017 New to fly fishing and fly tying. I think I would like to learn to tie flies. Have watched lots of You tube videos and have a couple books on the subject. So much to learn but have really enjoyed this forum, so thought I would introduce myself. Retired Fire Fighter and now living on a small farm with varies animals, enjoying farm life. I have looked at lots of vises, so some of you with knowledge talk me out of buying a regal........lol Expensive for sure, but I like the simplicity of them. I would mostly be tying trout flies. Thanks to a great forum and to all that help and make this community a nice place to come to.

mikechell 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2017 Welcome to the site ... and the hobby. I will say that I tied for decades on a $20.00 Supreme. I think they go for $29.00 at Bass Pro and Cabela's, now. My only argument against buying an expensive vise just starting ... what if you find you don't like it? Vises rarely "hold their value" and you won't get back what you paid for it if you decide to give it up. On the other hand, if you've got the spare cash, a quality vise will satisfy you forever. Philly 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2017 Welcome from SE PA. Went to college in NW TN back in the early 70's. Got my initial introduction to fly fishing there, though it took another 15 years before I took it up.

Being retired on fixed income now, I certainly don't have it to spare but I have been searching for a used regal for a couple weeks now and not many to be had and none near me so I'm thinking folks who buy them, like them enough to hang on to them. Prybis 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2017 Welcome from Indiana. I also suggest you start out with a cheaper vise. If you do not like tying you can than donate the vise to a new tyer or your local Project Healing Waters and not really have to worry about trying to recoup your money.
