Spade end hooks are interesting from the anglers perspective. They are very much the majority hook in UK competition bait (coarse) fishing. They give a more direct contact from line to hook than an eyed hook that has the potential to hinge.
A similar situation with the traditional salmon flies having room left at the head for a turle knot. Again this provides a more direct angle from line to hook and swims the fly better.
I still have a box of spade end hooks from my match fishing days.
Might make up some fly rigs on a winder to try for a comparison against eyed hooks.
