  1. Thanks for the information. Looks like I should hold out for a 1/2 midge saddle instead of the regular silver saddle. I plan to tie lots of tiny tailwater bugs over the next two years, pending an upcoming move. As usual, the members of this site are both helpful and knowledgeable. Thanks, all.
  2. I know that hackle gets discussed to death on any fly tying forum... but I was hoping that some of you with more Whiting purchasing experience (and bigger hackle collections ) would suffer a novice's questions. What would be an approximate range of dry fly sizes that one could reasonably expect from a Whiting silver 1/2 saddle? predominately 14-16? 14-18? smaller? I realize that it will vary depending on the particular saddle. Thanks!
  3. Aww... Good for you (and for him). My grandfather didn't fly fish, but I have fond memories of fishing with him. I'm sure your grandson will remember those times for the rest of his life.
  4. Congrats, Lykos. That's awesome that your wife got you a 5 wt. If I weren't happily married, I'd have to ask if she had a sister. :j_k: Have fun with your new outfit and tying stuff.
  5. "apophallation allows the slugs to separate themselves by one or both of the slugs chewing off the other's penis." I've never been happier not to be a slug. Forget "continuation of the species". I think I would have to remain celibate.
  6. If it's not a hacklestacker, perhaps you're thinking about Roy Christie's reverse parachute style? http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=34787 Good luck finding the technique you were looking for.
  7. Out of curiosity, is it possible to use rotary tying techniques to wrap hackle, ribbing, chenille, etc. on a "non-true rotary" vice like the HMH? How much difference does it make that the shank isn't perfectly in alignment? It doesn't seem that most true rotary vices keep very large or very small hook sizes in perfect alignment anyway (in my admittedly limited experience). I think I like the traditional configuration of HMH, etc., but I also like to use rotary techniques (currently tie on a Peak, which is a nice vise btw) And even though I think I like the traditional configuration better, I'd make an exception for the LAW vice. Troutbum, Mama said "The LAW vice is de devil!" :j_k: (okay, Mama didn't say that, and it's not the devil. It just makes me want to take up a life of crime so I could afford one.)
  8. All of these "what is your favorite xyz" posts have got to stop! I keep discovering things I don't have. :help: Or I suppose I could quit reading them... Sorry for the hijack. Now back to your regularly scheduled posting... Eric
  9. Thanks, Will, umm, Mr. Mullis, err, SmallieHunter.
  10. Hello, all. I have been around here for a year or two, but I ignored the posts about FTOTY until this year. I was never serious about fly tying anyway. But I may give it a shot this year, if I tie something I feel comfortable submitting. There are some really well-done flies in the years past. But.... does the submission have to be an original pattern? I looked through the rules, but didn't find the answer. Granted, you probably wouldn't want to enter a gold-ribbed hare's ear or an Adams. But are variations of known patterns acceptable? Sorry for the novice question :baby: . I just couldn't find the answer anywhere.
  11. I have never used any of his tying products, but I bought a number of hooks from Jan Siman in bulk a while back. If it's the same person, he was good to do business with. And sent me some pretty nifty looking Czech nymphs to boot.
  12. Kudos. I think this is a great idea, and I'm sure that it will be a utilized often.
  13. I upgraded to a Peak from the usual Cabelas starter vices. I'm very happy with it, although I still haven't gotten the hang of rotary tying yet (still seems easier to wrap hand-over-hand). I would be totally satisfied, if I hadn't seen a picture of the HMH microjaws. :wallbash: I'm trying to talk myself out of wanting a Spartan with microjaws as a dedicated small fly vice. The Peak midge jaws aren't bad, but they're a pain to switch out. And the HMH microjaws look awesome. Maybe I'll be lucky and find a deal on a used one.
  14. I have to second the suggestion of the Mickey Finn. When I lived inland (and had access to freshwater), I had some great times in the spring in small bass ponds with a Mickey Finn. They also work great for crappie and bluegill during the spawn. For still water fish, it helps if you add a few wraps of lead wire (if that's not too modern ) Another more modern suggestion (although a saltwater classic) would be Lefty Kreh's Deceiver. Just a thought.
  15. I also ordered one of the Christmas packs, but I still haven't gotten it. :dunno: I emailed in early Feb. and was told a replacement would be sent out immediately. It's March now, and still no kit. I just emailed them again, so I'll see what happens. I've only heard good things about them, and their prices are great. I also like the idea of supporting a small business instead of a megastore. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
