  1. Fred, Will makes a display case each year with all the flies and takes them around to trade shows with him to have on display. Here is one from a few years back:

  3. If I were to plan an Alaska trip with a bunch of friends, I'd plan on flying into Anchorage and renting an RV or a truck for 2-3 weeks then work the road system for salmon, trout and grayling, camping along the way. The Naknek and similar rivers/lodges are a great opportunity, but I personally would rather fish a number of different rivers and watersheds and explore in the process. Take a guided trip or two on the Kenai, do some saltwater fishing out of Deep Creek or Seward, wade Quartz, combat Bird Creek, fish the Little Su, Willow, Kashwitna, etc. on the way up to the Denail highway, then fish for grayling and camp for a couple days across the dirt road (you're not supposed to take rentals across the Denali, but whatever... ) then work your way back to Los Anchorage fishing the Gulkana, and some other smaller grayling streams like Mendeltna along the way. Just another option.
  4. It's a crisp -8F outside with not a cloud in the sky and as I looked out the window the moon was just begging for a photo shoot. This was taken hand held with a Canon EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens and Canon 1.4X teleconverter on my 30D; ISO 640, 400mm (x1.4), f/5.6, 1/250sec. I had to manually focus due to the teleconverter, so out of about 50 shots with different settings and focus, maybe 3 or 4 came out nice and clean like this one. Some minor tweaking in Lightroom and this is what I got.
  5. Congrats Will and Nick. I know you guys put your heart and soul into the mag and I'm sure it'll exceed all of our expectations as well. Waiting anxiously...
  6. I recall seeing a few websites that had been setup using free hosting sites, but they were full of ads, popups, etc. Check out Godaddy.com for cheap hosting and domain name registration. Monthly hosting is around $3.50/mo which includes a ridiculous amount of web space and bandwidth. I'm pretty sure they even has some free web hosting options w/ domain name registration purchase (again, with ads I'm sure).
  7. I had the same problem for most of yesterday Jay. It ended up clearing itself up later in the afternoon. Will said it was likely the DNS information having not been fully propagated after the server switch and that time would eventually fix it. Give it 'til later this afternoon and if you haven't been able to get in by then, shoot me an email.
  8. Cool stuff guys! Nice pics. Here is one of my favorites taken by a friend - love those teeth!
  9. Jim, I picked up a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro lens for my girlfriend a while back and it is a fantastic zoom/macro lens for the money and comes in at right around $200. It takes photos better than several other comparable lenses that I've tried that are 2-3x the price. It's not professional quality of course, but it is also not $1500 and for the price there is no better lens out there in its class. My girlfriend and I have been very, very pleased with it. Here is the version for the Pentax: http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-70-300mm-Telep...9490&sr=8-1 If you decide to go that route, be sure to get the DG APO Macro version. There is a DG Macro and an APO Macro and neither are as good as the DG APO Macro.
  10. A shot of an eagle taken this weekend while on a steelheading trip: Graham, we probably saw - no kidding - a thousand bald eagles during the course of the week. Most were paired up, and during the middle of the day they could be seen flying high in the sky in groups of 5-15.
  11. Ditto Will and Andrew and don't forget Amazon.
  12. Definitely some nice wide angle shots Graham. I especially like the shot looking up into the ship's rigging. What lens(es) were you using?
  13. Man Graham, that turtle is sick! The golden crowned kinglet is sure cute Chris. We have ruby crowned kinglets that flock around here in the summer. I'll try and get some shots when it warms up and they show their faces. Great doves and finches flyrod! Once I would've laughed if someone said 'learn to use a lens', but I know better now. Here are a few shots from this weekend taken with my new Canon 100-400L IS lens, which I have officially fallen in love with. :headbang: A camp robber: A boreal chickadee: A nuthatch: A kinda neat shot of a nuthatch really working to crack a shell with some serious backlight: Well, its not a bird shot but I'm a sucker for moon shots so here is one from last night:
  14. Beautiful scenery and photos.
