  1. If your handle wrap is 550 cord, pour some boiling hot water over the wraps and then stand it somewhere to let dry completely. The paracord will shrink tight as it dries. Assuming you never did this on the wrap before, but who knows maybe it works twice. I don’t know since I’ve never ever had one loosen up after pouring hot water over it.
  2. Congratulations on your retirement. I like retirement so much that I’ve retired twice so far and I’m looking forward to the third. Welcome to the site.
  3. Nice! I also enjoy making my own wading staffs because I like a taller staff and not spending money when I don’t have to.
  4. I’d just use thread to split them because it just seems easier, faster and better. But if UV glue works for you then it works for you.
  5. Oh I’m with you. I want all of those things but it’s no where even close to that and won’t be in my lifetime. The technology just isn’t there yet but dumbasses with more money then brains are out there killing themselves and others because they think their cars can drive themselves. I do like the FOBs.
  6. A very noticeable improvement in your tying. See how easy this is. Just think how much better you will be in another week, and another week. I have a lighted desk magnifier that I’m probably going to chuck since I tried it and found a don’t like it. I found it at the curb and it will go back to the curb. As others pointed out to me, it just gets in the way. I prefer a ball cap with the clip on hat magnifiers that we mostly all have for when we are fishing. Keep at it, your flies are progressing nicely.
  7. I hate the lane centering. I had the dealer shut it off completely. I like driving where I want to drive not where the car does and I didn’t like how the wheel would fight me. I can’t take the car shutting down when at stop. Fortunately you can shut that off yourself but you have to do it every time you get in the car. House lights turn off the auto high beams so I shut off the auto high beams off as well. All the self driving and auto stuff ain’t there yet, far from it, so until they perfect it, I’d rather not have it. Seems auto makers are just rushing inferior options out just to say they have it. Be very careful with all the auto stuff, it’s still seriously flawed and misleading.
  8. I was unfamiliar with the collet style vise. Very nice explanation Chug. If necessary, I would go with silicone gun cloth as it leaves only a super thin hardly noticeable film that will not collect funk.
  9. I like #2 and #3 better than the one tied with partridge. I really like them all but the partridge one is definitely middle of the road for me. The partridge wins the beauty pageant but I view #2 and 3 as the fish catchers. I think it’s a great example of positive substitution. Thanks for tying them up for comparison.
  10. If it binds, which I don’t think it will, WD40 makes a dry lube. Wiping it with a silicone gun cleaning cloth will put a very small and subtle amount of silicone lube on the vise without it being wet and oozing and will protect the finish if your worried about rust. Vaseline and marine grease would be a big no for me. I own a regal medallion, a griffin in line rotary and a Pettijean flymaster? All three work and look great and they have never seen oil or grease. I’m sure I’ve wiped them down with a silicon gun cloth but I can’t remember when.
  11. I’ve never put a drop of oil or grease or any kind of lubricant on any of my vises and they are all 20 to 40 years old. Never had to. Grease and oil collect dust and dirt that jam and gum things up. If you’re tying inside your house there really is no need to add grease to anything. If you do, it will collect dirt and you will have to clean it more. Perhaps a dry lube to protect the finish but I’ve never found that necessary either since my vises are used and stored in a climate controlled house.
  12. You’re well on your way. Proportions are something I cant get from a picture or a video. I would grab a tied PT soft hackle at the fly shop and use it as a model to help with proportions. There’s many ways to skin the cat. I don’t know Yvon nor do I know how he ties his flies, but for me, 140 thread is a little large for a size 12. I’m partial to UTC 70. I use separate bunches of PT fibers for the tail and body. Tie in the tail with one bunch, tying it all the way to the thorax to add a little bulk to the body. Tie in the body with a second bunch of fibers. When I wrap the PT fibers I wrap the thread back to the tail and then as I wrap the body fibers forward, the fibers push the thread forward. This will keep the PT fibers close and next to each other as they are wrapped forward. Counter wrap the rib by wrapping the PT fibers around the shank going away from you and wrap the rib coming towards you, in the opposite direction, or vice versa. by the way, a PT soft hackle is a great fly to learn on and fish. Keep at it your doing fine and your fly will indeed fish.
  13. That’s a great looking fly!
