Betty 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 Heading to New Orleans for some big reds this late fall season, they love crabs, shrimp and mullet. This is based on a pattern the guide gave me a few years ago and I've modified it like a Kinky Muddler only flat. It's made of wig hair, SF Blend and EP Foxy Brush plus medium lead eyes up front for a slow sinking drop.
Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 Looks good but you might want to make some that drop fast in case you get a day when they are hugging the bottom in three feet of water and/or you can't see them until they're ten or fifteen feet from the boat. Betty 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2013 Kirk the fly does drop quickly not fast, too many floaters in back marsh so I try to keep em slower. I'll tye up a few with heavy lead eyes, good suggestion thanks.
Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2013 Good plan, you can always snip lead off the eyes with your pliers when on the water if you need a lighter fly but its impossible to add if needed once on the water. Let us know how you do for sure.
Betty 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2013 Bunnystrip tail in chart/purp, silicone legs, wig hair body and arctic fox in orange.........
Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2013 That looks good. I'd make a dark version too. I've had redfish haul ass on several occasions throwing orange/chartreuse sinking flies. Depends on their mood.
Betty 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2013 Kirk.....have all dark purple, purple/black, purple/chart all tyed up. Dark patterns are killer in the marsh. I've got flys with large dumbell eyes, medium eyes and small bead chain for more floating fish. Great ideas thanks for your input.....
