  1. Don't use pegged beads as eggs in Wisconsin. Reading the regulations, it seems to me that any method that hooks fish outside the mouth would be illegal. http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/documents/regulations/FishingRegs12-13_web.pdf The regulations state "page 8: It is illegal - to fish by snagging, foul-hooking, or attempting to hook fish other than in the mouth. to keep foul-hooked, snagged or any fish not hooked in the mouth " Other states have similar regulations so check with your DNR http://cdfgnews.wordpress.com/2013/10/17/public-input-wanted-on-illegal-fishing-method/ I think Alaska changed their regulations so a pegged egg would be legal. Wyoming is like several states that allow pegged beads as long as they are no more than 2" above the hook. I have used beads IN Wisconsin for years, as well as others. when you use beads you are hooking the fish in the mouth, contrary to what some may think. There are some "purists" for lack of better term that look down at beads for whatever reason. If anyone doesn't want to use beads thats fine with me. Alaska has been OK with beads for years. They are an effective way to fly fish for Trout/salmon. nothing more to them than that.
  2. If your going to drift eggs use Beads, http://www.troutbeads.com/ . Best bead size is 8mm. If your going to swing eggs use eggs tied with Glo Bug Yarn, rag style, http://www.hawkinsflyfishing.com/clownegg.php . If your going to bottom bounce go with either one. Best color is a pale yellow/cream color, color of a day or two old egg. Alternate that with a orange egg or red. I like to use a clown rag egg when swinging flies. I use cherise, orange, red and Chartruese. If you can use 2 hooks run with a different sizes and colors till you can fiqure out what works best that day/place. I have used blue, chartruse, oranges, cream, dirty grey, glow in the dark colors and sizes from 1/4 to 1/2. Larger bright eggs in dirty water, smaller cream colored in clearer water.
  3. Fly fisherman have a monopoly on snobs. Without a doubt. Can any of you remember fishing with a spinning rod and another guy fishing with a spinning rod would bad mouth you for your choice of lure? Fly fisherman do it all the time, just start talking about using beads or indicators, it flushes out the snobs everytime.
  4. I looked at the whole drift boat thing myself a year ago. I fish good sized rivers that have a few drift boats on them already. the long and short of it I ended up fixing up a 12ft V hull aluminum row boat and put a 6 hp outboard on it. Some things to consider. 1) if your using a boat with no motor and fishing alone how are you going to get the boat back up the river to your vehicle? 2) how many people are you going to have in the boat? if 3 is the most than a drift boat, john boat or a row boat (V-hull) of 14 ft should work ok. One person is going to have to row almost all the time. 3) If your going to fish alone then a good easy to operate anchor system is a Must!! You'll have to be able to easily drop anchor when you hook a fish. Any drift boat or john boat or row boat can be set-up this way. 4) how much do you want to spend? A drift bosat is going to be the most expensive, even used. Small used John boats and row boats can be had easily for under $500 with a trailer, used motors for under $500 also. I paid $200 for my boat and trailer, $1300 for a new Merc 6 HP for a total of $1500. I am very happy with the way I went. A drift boat is a more specialized craft, But a John boat or Row Boat with a small outboard on it is very versatile, you can use it in a lake without having to row all over the place, Its a lot lighter than a drift boat and smaller too, making it easier to haul, launch and load. The only advantage a drift boat has its ability to go down very rough rapids. I can go down about anything that you would take a canoe down. You have to evaluate that with the type of rivers your going to fish. I can easily launch my boat and load it by myself. I can disconnect the boat and trailer from the tow vehicle and easily move them around by myself. The length of the boat on the trailer is about 14ft. Shorter than alot of cars. A small outboard uses very little gas. I go thru maybe 1-2 gallons for 3 days of solid fishing. If you go the outboard route make sure you get on with a tank built in to the motor. Makes things simpler. Also with the small outboard I can put it in "shallow water drive" and run thru water as shallow as 6-8 inches. I can run up moderate rapids with it at a very slow speed just working around rocks logs etc. Its not as sexy as a drift boat but it is smaller, lighter, more versatile and cheaper, what's not to love? Another option you man not of considered.
  5. I have used J. Stockard, Caddis fly Shop and Fly Tiers Dungeon so far. I would rate them as follows. Caddis fly Shop is best, much quicker delv. good prices plus they have tons of videos on tying which is a big help to me as a rookie so that's worth something to me. I have talked to them several times on the phone and they have been great everytime. J. Stockard 2nd only because they have a bigger selection than the Dungeon. they are 2-3 days longer for delv. than the Caddis fly shop. They also seem like more of a big business than the other 2. Fly Tyers dungeon last only because he has a limited selection of stuff, I know he makes the stuff himself and if I'm looking for anything he makes I'm buying from him 1st. You do get the best deal for the buck from him by a long shot. I really like his congo hair and his stick on eyes.
  6. Looks real nice. I tied up some in 2 different sizes. I will give it a try in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to Steelheading. I checked out the river Friday and its mostly ice covered still. But soon, very soon.
  7. +2 on the shannon's streamer. I haven't fished it yet but I tied some up about a week ago. Used white and olive colored Yarn/Chennile. If you want a couple of feet of the yarn let me know. I have more than I'll ever use. Send me a direct email to [email protected] Dirk
  8. I use a magnifier and reading glasses when tying. I started with just reading glasses, then added the magnifier, now it seems I can't tie without the magnifier. It does help alot in seeing what your doing. But it does get in the way sometimes. Mostly when winding hackles on wooly buggers and such larger flies.
  9. I bought a pair of simms wader this early spring. I use them for steelhead in the spring and fall. I probably go fishing 60-80 times for steelhead a year. So I do use them alot and I am rough on them, I do alot of hiking up and down hils, thru briar patches, climbing up the riverbanks on my knees, and sliding down hillsides and riverbanks on my arse. My waders sprung a leek on the inside seams by the knees, patched them with Aquaseal. Ended up patching them a total of 3 times. It was a case of them always being creased/flexing on the inside seam area for the most part. The wader mat'l was wearing thru on the outside where the reinforcement tape ended on the inside. The reinforcement tape was too narrow and now newer ones have a wider tape on them. I was told by a fly shop owner that sells simms that the particular style I bought had a issue with the reinforcement tape on the inside and what I experienced he had seen before. I didn't send them in until beginning of December and got them back in less than 3 weeks. They did a excellent job of fixing them by adding a wider reinforcement tape and they also patched the boot covers where holes had developed on top of one of the boot lugs. The shop that I bought them from assured me that I'd have no issues with simms on the repair even tho we were not going to return them until I was done fishing for the year. I was worried about simms standing behind them after I slopped up the inside and outside of my waders with aquaseal. I too was told of issues with simms standing behind their product. I also thought that the fit could of been better. They are baggy in the legs and chest area. So when I took them in for repair I expressed this concern with the shop. They had me try on different sizes. It came out that I had the best fit I could get with standard size waders. So I am satisfied with my simms and would buy another set. Hopefully they will last for a couple of more years. I am glad with the help I got from the shop I purchased them from and I am sure that the shop can apply pressure to simms if they want to. I also like the fact that simms makes their waders here in the USA.
  10. to kill any pests or eggs on any fur or feathers Microwave for 20-30 seconds wait a minute and microwave again for 20-30 seconds. Store with aromatic cedar boards/chips in sealed box or bag.
  11. how about sliding a indicator/bobber up the leader for when you want to fish that way? What is the O.D. of the little ring for attaching the tippet? Sounds like the cats meow for dry flies, how about nymphing with a indictor/bobber? Or what about fishing in cold weather when your guides are freezing up? will this set-up ice up? I may give it a try this spring for smallies and carp. I'll wait to hear what the experts say about the icing situation before I'd try it for steelhead.
  12. I use a Lamson Conic on my 8wt that I use for Steelhead and Smallmouth bass. Never had a issue with it. Price is about what your looking for.
  13. The amur Pike is really a pretty fish. I gave up ice fishing many years ago. I have had great days catching Northern Pike thru the ice and crappies. But I have a real affection for fishing moving water, I absolutely love fishing in rivers. I don't mind the cold, I have fished the rivers when you have to cast around the slush-bergs and never felt cold. I can take fishing in a lake but a frozen lake or river really doesn't do it for me. They do ice fish some of the tributary rivers around here for big Brown Trout. It sort of offends my sensibilities to a degree. I'll wait for March when the steelhead bite starts to pick up.
  14. Looks like Corian or a similar product. I assume your casting this so that's why your maintaining the "organic" look. I would be concerned with the strength depending upon the type of mat'l it is. I have worked with some of these type mat'ls in the past and some are relatively brittle when compared to a steel/brass/aluminum. I can't really give you "expert" advise on its fly tying functionality as I have just started tying myself. I do have some cosmetic suggestions which usually are a matter of opinion so take them for what they are. 1) I'd dump the slotted screw for holding the jaws to the arm, looks cheap, I'd use a Button head cap screw in black finish. 2) the rotating knob, you can see where it was machined and that effects the nice smooth cast color/texture. 3) if its on the light side could you cast in some heavier mat'l on the bottom side of it where its not visible. I like the cast look to a degree, I assume that you can cast it in different colors similar to corian. That might be an selling point to some. Personally I think that a few machined and black anodized aluminum parts would look nice in contrast to the cast mat'l. I'd do the 2 knobs that way myself. Depending upon the color your casting you could do contrasting anodized colors.
  15. I just started tying again after about 30 years of being away from fly fishing and fly tying. I started easy with my first flies. I fish alot of Steelhead so naturally I thought just an ordinary egg would be first, then maybe a Estaz egg then a Crystal meth. Well these I completed to my satisfaction relatively painlessly. So my next step was some Nymph and Streamer patterns. Here is where I get frustrated. On almost all of the patterns I am looking to tie (similar to ones I have fished in the past with success) I can find a list of mat'ls to get but the list is very poorly described or lists something that I can't find. Such as 1) Antron Sparkle Dubbing, color dirty yellow. I can find the Antron dubbing, and its listed in 40 colors, but no dirty yellow. I'll bet your Idea of dirty yellow and my idea of dirty yellow would be 2 different colors. 2) Black Larva Lace Apparently Larva Lace is a Company name, they make various items in Black, so what do i get? Angel Hair? Poly Bear? Phat Yarn? Teaser Tinsel? They make dozens of products. 3) Craft Eyes Wow! talk about Vague, I ask 3 different guys at the fly shop and I get 3 total different answers. So my point is this, if your going to share a pattern, Great, But please be specific with what you use, a manufactures name, what the manufacture calls it and how about what color the manufacture calls it. I have seen this same thing happen in many other areas. Someone who has been in the field for awhile takes for granted what he knows and assumes everyone else knows the same. BIG Mistake. It's like a Heart Surgeon telling a butcher to "open this guy up, Stat". So please try to be more specific so us Butchers have a easier chance of heading in the right direction at least.
