zip 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2016 Was reading through some old fly books (ancient damn near) and found this pattern.Didn't give any details on the species although it resembles some early bass flies.I'd venture to say it would do well for salmon and steelhead, too! Hook is a Mustad SZ-34011 (z-steel) Tail:3 golden pheasant body feathers-gold Rib:large round copper tinsel Body:brown seal fur (heavily tapered) Hackle:Golden pheasant body feathers-3 red/2 gold Wing:cluster of Peacock swords Head:Pigs wool I have a feeling this fly is going to treat me well for some big browns! Yeti 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2016 I like that one! I think it could do well for many species. Steelhead as a more drab natural comeback fly to change to when you get those short strikes.

Meeshka 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2016 Looks kinda like a Doc Spratley Variant to me. The Spratley would have Gunea Fowl tail and throat, and no peacock topping. Hackle generally ringneck rump. But I have seen them tied in that fasion. And they can be one hot trout fly!
DrVette 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2016 For fishing i think the sword herl was a GREAT choice. Do you have smaller tinsel? It looks to be fighting for space on this fly. Since it is for fishing toss the oval. But the fly looks GREAT. I wish i could build a natural head that clean. I have to cut and fake with lacquer.
