EzGoing 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 Are there any fly tying vise collectors out there?...Over the years I've acquired 6 vises including an old hand held 'German' vise and a Thompson A which came with my original beginners tying kit 20 some-odd years ago, and a cheap regal off shoot made in India. My 3 other vises are more 'upscale'. But, I thought to myself, damn,I'm becoming [unintentionally] a collector. Curious if people intentionally collect tying vises. fishingbobnelson 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 I have a small collection of old fly tying tools including a Thompson "B" vise and a Thompson bobbin. I also have a number of other tools. I stop at yard sales and every once and a while I see something. My pride is a Cortland Fly Tying Kit with all materials and the vise still under plastic wrap. Toirtis 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 I really want to, and have four relatively inexpensive vises currently. I am enthralled with the beauty and innovation of vise design, and although there are a lot that I would really like to own, it will take a while, as it get pricey fast when what you collect typically ranges from $100-$500 each. flytire 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2012 I do not collect fly tying vises. My collecting "vice" seems to be collecting more materials than i'll ever use in my remaining lifetime

I love my JVice as well/my favorite. I recently acquired a McKenzie vise that I think I'm going to really enjoy. The Dyna-King [Ron Abbey Special] has slipped down a notch or two...at least until I start tying larger flies.

There seemed to be a tiny bit of "play" in the housing which allowed you to rotate the jaws unless you really locked it down stationary. The jvice becomes sort of "invisible" when you are tying. It's the best for tying that I have found. Closest was the LAW, but it was such a work of art, I hated to actually use it.........
hairwing 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 Can I ask, is there a more desirable vise than this one ? http://www.crossroadsanglingauction.com/products-page/page/3/ You're gonna need a whopper balance in the ole checking account to add this gem to your collection. On auction the 27th Oct. Good Luck !
Byron 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 Mary Dette used to tie on one just like that. I am probably going to be wrong on this, but, I believe he and Mary (for that matter) used "jewelers' vises". Wish I could know for sure, but I believe that is true. Perhaps someone knows for sure? oldtrout58 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 Apparently I am collecting vises. I’ve given several away: a DanVise, a Price vise, several Thompsons, and a Bill Hunter (API or HMH, I think), but I’ve acquired a couple too. I have 4 ½ vises now, well 5 vises, but one is so tiny I consider it half a vise.

Yes, the AK Best/McKenzie but the second edition which I'm told they upgraded the jaws...improved serations and stronger. I've not had an issue at all with the housing. I love the vise! It will make a great travel vise or if I just need a clamp vise. It holds a hook as well as the Jvice and Dynaking. It's just a cool simple vice. The Jvice is more elegant and the Dynaking more of a tank. The McKenzie is right in the middle.
perchjerker 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2012 Winnie Dette's vice was Tissot Watchmaker's vice, with a modified jaw. Pictures of her vise are to be found throughout Eric Leiser's book: "THE DETTES A Catskill Legend".
flytire 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2012 anybody have one like this finely crafted vise? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Built-Fly-Tying-Vise-NICE-/310434343558?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4847542a86
petelangevin 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2012 No but i had been watching it. Its unique. Not much room to work behind the hook. More of a conversation piece. Definitely one of a kind.
