  1. Hello from Livonia! Welcome to the site, I'm new here as well, but I make sure to catch up on the posts every other day or so. I am sure you will find a lot of the material helpful.
  2. Im new to the forum and just a beginner on the vise, but I would love to join if you'll have me. Would be a great experience and nice to make some new fishing buddies.
  3. I was recently wondering the same thing and did a little research. Here are some sites that helped me understand the technique: http://www.rioproducts.com/skin/summit/pdf/RIO_Spey_Casting_Manual.pdf http://www.rioproducts.com/spey-central/ There is also the technique of using a single handed rod for spey casting: http://speyrivers.com/gear_singlehandspey.aspx
  4. Do you live near the lake? Im from Livonia. I usually fish the inland lakes in Oakland County for bass and pike, but get out to the big lake once in a while.
  5. That fly would take a beating on Lake St. Clair. What hooks do you use for your articulated streamers?
  6. Sorry, for the late response, but thank you everyone. A lot of great information. flytire, that was an extremely helpful link. feels like i just took Hackle 101.
  7. All great suggestions, but I'm still curious. Is there a difference between the saddle and cape? Do i need to buy one specifically for dry flies or will they work for both wet and dry?
  8. All the the feathers are the same size on the ones I have, so the hackle gauge will not help me at the moment. Ill look into getting some better ones soon and pick up a gauge then. Thank you both. Could I use the Metz Grade 2 Saddle for dry flies?
  9. I haven't been tying for too long so this might be a potentially stupid question. I purchased a materials kit from Jann's and the black and brown hackle that came with the kit have really long fibers on the feathers. When wrapped, the fibers extend below the point of the hook. Should I look into getting a higher quality hackle for tying smaller dry flies? Is there a practical use for the long fibered hackle? Is "long fiber" even the correct way to describe it?
  10. Hello everyone, Im new to the site so I wanted to introduce myself. Im a student at CMU so my time is split between Metro Detroit and Central Michigan. I love bass fishing, but recently bought a fly rod and started tying flies. I plan on spending some time on the headwaters of the Upper Manistee and Au Sable chasing Michigans native brook and brown trout. None of my friends or family fly fish or tie so this will be a primarily self taught experience, but I look forward to learning from other members on this site. If any Michiganders would like to hit the river or the vise to share some wisdom just PM me, I would love to learn more.
  11. I live in Michigan as well. I am a student at CMU, so I am not far from you. I like to head over to Midland once in a while to stop by Little Forks Outfitters.
