  1. I purchased 100 jig hooks because you can get a price break at Allen hooks. I was planning on learning the crawdad craig pattern and it uses a jig hook. Now I have all these jig hooks and only know one type of fly on them. Can anyone suggest other good flies to tie on these? I'm sure I could tie any pattern on this but how do you know when to use a jig hook vs. a streamer hook? Here is a link of the ones I got. https://www.allenflyfishing.com/j200-jig-streamer-hook/
  2. At the end of May, I am heading on a cruise that leaves from Puerto Rico and goes to Barbados, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Marteen, and St. Thomas. I have only found a small bit of resources on fly fishing these areas. I would love to be able to go somewhere on a couple of these islands to catch bonefish or something like that. I have no experience fishing these areas so I don't really know what to look for. Any help y'all can give me is much appreciated.
  3. Has anyone ever used this? I have a floating line with a built in sink tip but was curious at the add on piece that you can add to a floating line. I am tired of swapping my floating line with my sink tip line and this may be a good solution. Is this equivalent to having 2 reels or is 2 reels better than a sink tip add on type?
  4. Thanks for your help. I probably won't attempt fly fishing if it is windy. I will get a 8 or 10 wt one day that will be set up for salt water.
  5. Besides the fact of it being hard to cast if it is windy, can I use a 6 wt cabelas RLS combo in salt water? I am concerned about corrosion. Does anyone know if a good rinse off will prevent this or will it mess it up by getting salt water on it?
  6. I am looking at purchasing a new line for my fly reel. I currently have a cabelas RLS 6 wt combo if that helps on which line to choose. I am trying to save a little money and I came across Sierra.com It looks like they sell models that aren't made anymore. I mainly fish in central Texas small rivers and creeks for black bass. Can anyone recommend a fly line from this link: https://www.sierra.com/fishing-lines-and-fly-lines~d~132/ It is all Scientific angler and rio brands or if anyone knows of another good discount website. I have seen websites where you pick what kind of line and they just send you one such as 6wt weight forward for example. I haven't ever done this and I am kind of weary to do so.
  7. I have google searched and nothing of any significance ever comes up for tying beginner bass flies. I have done some searching within this forum to find it but haven't had much success. Can anyone tell me some good largemouth bass patterns to tie for beginner fly tiers? and possibly good links to recipes for them? I have just scraped the surface of fly tying so I don't know much yet but I am learning quickly. Thanks in advance.
  8. I uploaded a file but it didn't come in I guess. Now I don't know how to post with a URL.
  9. I am fairly new to tying flies and I have been tying lots of Clouser minnows to prep for the white bass run. I ventured off from tying a sparse pattern and tried to do a thick, perch clouser pattern. I did a base with bead chain eyes, a small clump of florescent orange, then a bit of olive green on top of that before flipping it over and tying in flash and another set of olive green. Towards the end of putting it all together with the last set of hair, the thread started to slip and rip from other parts that had been finished. Is there a way to prevent this? I had to untie a bunch of it and tie the last clump of hair further back to get it to all tie in together and I used a lot of head cement because I was unsure of how it will hold up in the water. I have attached a pic for reference of the end fly.
