My spey/dee spin on a black bear green butt

Recommended Posts

Hi all, its been quiet here of late so I figured its time to post one of my ties. Its anything but perfect and the photo really reveals the small imperfections (as needing an additional coat of varnish), but still am happy with it as its a fly for fishing, not show. I really like the spey/dee look of flies and am having a lot of fun learning and getting better, and throwing a spey twist to classic hairwing patterns. The malard/teal wings are a real challenge, but I'm slowly getting better at them. If you have any pointers or tips with these challenging wings, feel free to shoot them at me. This baby is going to be getting some swing time next week on the York river in Gaspe.

Cheers!

One of the great things about tying salmon/steelhead patterns is you're not imitating any living thing, so you're free to use your imagination and change things in ways that are pleasing to your eye. I have made many classic hairwings into spey patterns myself, adding a body hackle here, a roof of duck flank there....it's all good. Keep up the good work and you'll be rewarded.

When it comes to bronze mallard it takes practice, but there are tricks that actually make it much easier. Watch one of Davie McPhail's spey fly videos and you'll see how easy it can be. Using quality feathers, tying in at the right point on the slip, and using wax at the right time all are important parts of tying in a good b.m. roof.

Great gratification! I hooked a 15lbs atlantic on this fly 6th cast, of the first pool of my trip. He liked it very much! Lost the fish to a very nasty rapid, but thats fishing! Fish won! Very hzppy with the fly; will certainly be tying more...

Well that's awesome! I know it's great to hold 'em, but I remember some of my lost fish more than the ones I landed. Hooking up with a fly or variation you came up with makes it even better.

Indeed, I agree! Quite the memory! Just extra motivation to tie up a series of these guys in a range of sizes! Which will be great practice for the wings at the same time!

Cheers!
