  1. I have never fished sculpin patterns, but I like a big fat muddler. I would be better off sometimes if I remembered to stock up on that pattern.
  2. Thanks guys! I have a few Spring flies left over that will be going with me. I'm also gonna try my hand at some simple craw patterns. I should learn a couple anyway since I do so much warm water. Hi John! Love your screen name here. Get ahold of me sometime, we are overdue for some fishing. Bring that laughing footware peddler too.
  3. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to matching the hatch. But the advice given above makes sense to me. Otherwise, I like throwing BIG streamers as the big boys won't refuse what looks like a nice meal. I was in a situation last week where a mediocre hatch was going on, yet I got into fish chucking basic streamers tied on #2 up to 3/0 hooks. After the final score was tallied, the larger flies produced more fish. -Chris
  4. Looks like I'll be getting my first shot at some Skams this coming Sunday. We'll be fishing on Michigan's west side. Does anyone have any suggestions for flies? I would appreciate any advice given. -Chris
  5. Came close to getting one this afternoon, but it rolled up on the line and broke me off above the leader. I'm gonna switch to a heavier leader, 20# P-line Flouroclear, and keep the 30# Spiderwire tippet for now. The reason I'll be switching to the Flouroclear is because that's what I use on my baitcasters, and I have some leftover after spooling up.
  6. Not a fan of the NBA, but I like to see a local team win big. I can't roll off stats and figures like a true fan of the sport, but I can say that our guys worked as a true team, their work ethic and attitude is what took this one. I live 10 minutes west of Motown, and you should have seen this neighborhood come alive as the clock ticked down the final seconds. Screams, yells, sirens, explosions, and a few gunshots. You would have thought it was a typical Friday night.
  7. What presentation are you using? Maybe you could loosen your drag and play them a little more. IMO, a bent hook is a symptom of horseing them too much on a tightly set drag. I've had good luck on bigger fish using a leader of straight 8lb P-Line CX tied to my fly with an improved clinch. I've even used 4lb on my 6wt and pulled it off. Dragging weighted nymphs and streamers across a muddy bottom is the usual method for me. I don't think "leader spooking" is an issue with this presentation.
  8. Fishing is a gamble. When I go, I bring a few different rods and let the conditions determine my presentation, flies, bait, plugs....I let Mother Nature determine my approach and go from there. I rarely buy flies as I tie about 90% of what I use when I do. When I use my own ties, there's a certain sense of laying myself on the line....literally. I tied it and presented it in my own way. When I hook or even land a fish on one of my own, I get a satisfaction that I don't get from a bought lure or bait. Then there's the art of casting. I taught myself to flyfish. Money can't buy that feeling of hooking a fish after a perfectly rollcasted fly that came from my vice. Knowing that the knots I tied on my own leader made from what I had available at the time held up is icing on the cake. There's a personal aspect to flyfishing that other methods don't allow me to experience.
  9. Thanks for the tips guys. I'm using flies tied on 3/0 hooks and this setup turns them over pretty good. I'll look for the Tyger stuff next time I'm at Cabela's, and have considered using heavy florocarb, but so far I'm happy with how the Spiderwire works. We've had more rain in Michigan, so it might be a while before I really get to see how this setup pans out.

    Way off topic

"A census taker once tried to test me.-- I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." I thought you guys just tied flies here. lol
  11. I'm trying like hell to get my first on the fly musky. With all the rain we've been getting in MI, water clarity has been a problem. Hopefully that will change. I've used 30lb Spider Wire for leaders on my spinning rigs with great success, and have been fooling around with it on my 8wt. I'm tying 6lb Yozuri co-polymer to my fly line, about 4' of it joined with a surgeon's knot to 20" or so of the Spider which is tied to my fly. Passes the "hand pull test" and in theory should hold up to a decent toothy critter. Anyone here ever try something like this?
  12. Nice fish. Cruisers are a pain in the neck, but I've turned a few by letting an unweighted marabou leech fall slowly just ahead of them. I guess they think its something dead and tasty.
  13. I've had good luck with white/chatreuse ESLs. White chenille body with chartreuse hackle, head and tail. A little weight is a good idea. As mentioned above, a fast and furious retrieve can pay off. If I'm using a weighted fly, a "striper strip" is deadly. They can lose interest when the fly slows down.
  14. Been checkin' out this site for a while, decided I should join the party. Hi, I'm Chris. I live in SE Michigan and earn my pay as the Chef in a small mediterranean restaurant on the Huron River in Ypsilanti. Some of you know me from another site. I don't define myself as a fly dunker as I enjoy hooking fish on bait, plugs, and spinners that I make, but I get a HUGE kick out of using my own flies. When chucking hook and hackle, I mainly use streamers on warm water, but I do a little bit of everything including dries that match the hatch on some of upper Michigan's trout streams when I get the chance. I'm also the President of an organization that operates a fish ladder on the Huron. We've had everything from steelies, salmon, trout, musky, bass, carp, and a few walleye move through. Neat stuff. I know I'll learn a lot here, including how I'm going to get that first on the fly musky....and I'm more than willing to share what little I've learned on my home waters. -Chris
