brooktrout308 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2016 Hello, new here I'm from Pa. I started tying flys when I was about 8 yrs. one guy showed me one fly not even a trout fly, that's my only training. If my memory serves me correctly I think I caught about 13 trout in the next 7 or 8 yrs. back then I don't think I ever saw anybody fly-fishing. Any way I got my first job when I was 15 and didn't have much time for fishing or tying, when I turned 18 I joined the service when I got out I had a girl friend, got married, bought a house that needed fixing up, had kids etc .So when I finally turned 60 and I think my time is my time now I dug out what I had of fly tying stuff, guess I don't need to tell you moths or something ate everything. I went to fly shows and ordered stuff on line. Big mistake you should ALWAYS take some body with experience with you, I guess I got wrapped up in the length of feathers today compared to 40 + yrs. so now I have feathers to tie Wooly Buggers and not much else, so I guess its time to start buying stuff more wisely. The one saddle that will tie smaller size flys seems to have a curve to the feathers its impossible to tie a dry fly the barbs either face backwards or forwards they will not stand straight up the way they should on a good dry fly. Maybe I should have said the feathers are concaved in shape, oh and another thing I never checked was the barb count I'm thinking the feathers might have a barb count of about 15 to 20 per inch. I love fly fishing and tying but I really do think once you start you all but have to stick with it don't take a break like I did, so for now I'm just going to learn as much as I can and enjoy it. And hook up with somebody that knows what they are doing or at least willing to get you started on the right foot. Anyway good luck to everybody where ever your fishing.
