  1. Mainbutter, I too am a beginner....I have been tying since the 90's but am still learning every time I sit at the tying bench. The only bit of advice I can offer is try to get a consistant head out of your fly. If you look at the six above, all six have a different looking head. The top right green fellow has a nicely tapered and finished head that is not too big or too small for this size of a fly. Other than that you seem to be a fast learner.

I'm heading to Tobin lake in a few days......for those who are'nt familiar...It's where that catholic priest broke the world walleye record this past winter with a 17 pounder.....I hope they'll take a fly........if not I have lots of hotdogs to eat.

  4. Thanks guys. Bud......There's great fishing only 10 minutes from my house, pike, walleye, perch, and if I drive a bit more I can get into lake trout and rainbows!
  5. Since I moved to this province 2 years ago, I've had to do all of my material gathering by mail order. All of the shops I've been to carry very little, if any, tying materials or gear. Even in the city, a big tackle shop stopped selling tying stuff because it did not sell. I went to Whole sale sports, a huge outdoor store, they had less material than I have in my own stock. I guess I'll have to appoint myself, "Fly fishing ambassador" and try to get other interested in the sport. We just bought an acreage and I've been tied up with all that goes with a big purchase, I have'nt even wet a line yet! I'm hoping to get out soon though, I need a break from the world soon. Heres a photo of my new homestead, Gilly Acres.......my first home purchase.
  6. Welcome MT...don't feel you have to be at a certain level of skill to jump in. This site has amazing masters at classics and hackers like me.......jump in and have fun. There are lots of good people on this forum and lots of people more than happy and willing to offer advice and guidance without egos attached. You picked the best forum to join. Look forward to seeing some of your work.
  7. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by Gilly: http://www.flytyingforum.com/uploads/galle...485d644b26e.jpg I don't know what happened here for my photo, it just would'nt post. I got this popper pattern from an old fishing book that had a page full of poppers used in the 40's and 50's. I have'nt tried this pattern yet.
  8. I do pretty much the same thing, I tie a 25 lb piece of mono to the trailer hook then crazy glue it, tie the streamer up.
  9. QUOTE (rougetrout @ May 18 2005, 07:45 PM) Beautiful flies. It is an interesting idea to tie a fly in the colors of a Tartan...I wonder which clan tartan colors would work best???? I got a whole page of tartan flies off of the net from Scotland, it has mainly prominant family tartans used. Thanks for looking.
  10. Awesome looking fly BC, well done!
  11. The details on the fly look good, just maybe a more "fly friendly" background.
  12. Just send all your stuff to me
  13. QUOTE (steeldrifter @ May 13 2005, 10:38 PM) Gilly you need to carry that big guy in your box and when someone on the stream ask's what their takeing just pull that out and say here ya go That would be a real funny thing to do on an unsuspecting guy I think I'll do that this summer!
  14. QUOTE (Joe Hard @ May 13 2005, 10:59 AM) How did you get that hook into your vice? I was only able to fit the first 1/4" of the point in to my vice at full open! Thanks for the comments.
