1. I fish a Patagonia Atom Sling pack. I'm not much into the vests. I've been very happy with it. Be sure to check for watertight/waterproof compartments. From a weight distribution perspective, I'd rather fish with something behind me than in front of me. http://www.patagonia.com/product/stealth-atom-fly-fishing-sling-pack-15-liters/48327.html?dwvar_48327_color=FGE&cgid=sport-fly-fishing-packs-gear#tile-13=&start=1&sz=36
2. Fished the Rio Serrano in Torres del Paine on 1.11.18. There was plenty of pressure. Locals fish early 3/4 AM. Gringos on tours go out next at 9 am. Especially on the Chilean side you are fishing "bocas" or mouths from glacial lake waters. Once you get behind the boca you can fish smaller streamers, buggers, sculpins etc. On the Argentine side we were fishing orange wooly buggers. Patgonia is windy! This is two handed spey territory. If the fly fishing is not going well do not hesitate to pick up a spinning rod. You will be throwing some of the biggest spoons you have ever seen to freshwater fish. I posted a few back on my trip to Patagonia. Have fun!
3. I do enjoy using ice dub. Need to find more patterns that would call for it. Believe it or not I love tying with heavy streamer thread. Something about seeing it come out of the bobbin. Weird, I know. I have some scud back that also looks interesting. Haven't tied with it yet but I should. Hate spinning deer hair like some other folks have mentioned.
4. All, I've been dying to share this with folks since I returned on Monday. My family and I were lucky enough to spend 14 days in southern Patagonia and Buenos Aries. I'll do my best to highlight some touristy things we did and more importantly the fishing. A few quick notes; this was a family vacation and not a planned fishing vacation. However, I was lucky to get some days away to fish. We were also traveling with our 3 year old. Day 1-3 Buenos Aries - This was a great way to break up travel. We saw the mausoleum of Evita Peron, did a street food tour, saw the old apartment for the Pope (they were all very mad he went to Peru and Chile), and toured some museums and local neighborhoods. Wife and I picked up some leather jackets on the cheaper side to us. The dollar is quite strong 19:1. Day 4-7 Bariloche We did some hiking our first day and the second day was fishing for me. We were in Nauel Huapi National Park. This is the park that the Limay River empties in to. Fished from a boat hitting beautiful waterfall pockets with sinking tips and streamers. The guide Paolo was fabulous and I saw one other fisherman that day. I broke two fish off early in the morning. Being from the East Coast I just muscled the fish a bit more than I should have. Day 7 - 9 Ushuaia - This is where most folks hop a boat to go to Antarctica. One day we did the penguin colonies with our son and another hiking. I spent another day fishing. Lake fishing again but this time from the shore. The guide gave me a rod with a 25 foot shooting head and asked me to kindly cast 80 ft out in to the lake. Did I mention its always windy in Patagonia? The day did not go well for me. We hooked one fish. Day 10 - 14 Torres del Paine - We moved countries from Argentina to Chile. I was not impressed with what Chile had to offer. The food was scary looking (I've spent 4 days in the Sierra Nevada range eating only out of a cup so...) and the service just wasn't what it was in Argentina. We did some hiking, saw a glacier, and took in the national park. I had one day fishing on the Rio Serrano for king salmon and brown trout. Did I mention its windy down there? I threw spoons on spinning gear to salmon the size of an F-150. We saw them jumping so they were out there but not interested in what we had to offer, nor the 20 or so other fisherman out that day. We didn't catch a thing. Guide seemed more interested in telling me about helifishing and how much better the fishing was there. This was a great trip! To those who might be planning a getaway I would recommend Argentina over Chile. Traveling with children was easier than expected. My wife and I are already talking about a return trip to Mendoza, Iguazu, and some other areas we missed. Happy to answer any questions folks might have. If I was doing this trip again I would try to float the Limay in Bariloche, try to make the trip up to Rio Grande in Ushuaia, and would avoid Chile.
5. Muddler minnow. Spinning deer hair is hard af... https://www.flickr.com/photos/125882129@N08/39848606421/in/dateposted-public/
6. Good stuff here! Will certainly check out the articles and pick up the eBook. Happy New Year!
7. My dry fly tying is abhorrent. For dubbing I've tried numerous methods (dubbing wax, dubbing loops, less material, over wraps with bare thread, etc). Every time I dub a body it looks like complete and utter garbage. I do work better with some materials and it has me wondering if I just have low quality synthetic material. I hate to blame the material but I do better with hares ear material and some crystal flash dubbing I just purchased. Any suggestions to tie a better dry fly or Youtube videos I should watch? PS I do not have a hackle gauge but it is on my list next time I head to the shop. Thanks!
8. I'm not but my department chair is most likely heading down. The Gasparilla Bad Boy Bowl. Apparently a Gasparilla is some sort of nickname for a pirate. Who knew!
9. Good to see you back, from Villanova, if my brain is working... Like this photo a bunch, thanks for the share! Close, and very good memory. Temple. Wish I had a picture of the fox is saw in the snow before this.
10. Mike - Your eyes do not deceive. Fshng2 - See you out on the water! Trying to get out to the Tuplehocken or elsewhere in Lancaster country for a change of scenery.
11. Put a new arrow in the quiver yesterday. Needed something to sit between my Sage Vantage 4 wt. and my Orvis Clearwater salt 9 wt. Picked up the Orvis Recon 9.0 6 wt. My parents sent along some gift cards early and couldn't resist. Took the rod out the other day in Delaware and avoided getting skunked.
12. Quick question. Trying to use Flickr URL but I received an error in the picture upload. Dialogue box states the URL is an invalid time. Any suggestions?
